Well, the day is off to a rousing start. I am up at at the crack of dawn, showered and ready for an exciting morning of trade deadline action!
New comes per a team press release…
The Penguins will honor their 25,000,000th fan during Wednesday’s game against St. Louis at CONSOL Energy Center. Game time is 7 p.m.
Counting regular season and playoff games since their inception in 1967, the Penguins have drawn 24,983,853 fans.
Through bar code technology, the Penguins and arena operator SMG will be able to track when the 25,000,000th fan enters the gates Wednesday night. The fan will be notified during the first period and honored during the second period.
The lucky 25,000,000th fan will win a road trip to a Penguins game as well as an autographed Sidney Crosby jersey.
All fans in attendance will receive coupons for a free cup of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee; free skate rental at Penguins Pond at SouthSide Works; and 25 percent off one purchase at the PensGear store at SouthSide Works.
The Penguins are expecting their 220th straight sellout crowd Wednesday. Capacity at CONSOL Energy Center is 18,387, and the Pens need just 16,147 to reach 25,000,000.
For the record, the Penguins have drawn 22,733,362 fans to regular season games and 2,250,491 fans to playoff games.
It isn’t often that the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals are on the same team in any cause. In fact, they are probably two of the biggest rivals in the National Hockey League, however there is one cause that is big enough to bring these two Eastern Conference foes together—raising funds for the families of those lost in the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl disaster. The teams have announced a joint effort to raise money for the families of Lokomotiv Yaroslavl who lost so much in the plane crash Sept. 7 in Russia.
As Penguins training camp rolls on, so do the roster cuts following each game, the latest being a 3-2 Penguins victory over the Los Angeles Kings in Kansas City. The Birds have pared seven more bodies from their camp roster and there are a couple of interesting names on the list.
The Penguins head into their first game of the pre-season this evening against the Detroit Red Wings. Having the Wings swoop through to participate in the first actual hockey game of the season is starting to be a Consol Energy Center tradition as they were the first opponent to skate against the Birds in pre-season tilt last year when the barn first opened its doors.
Personally, I am not expecting to see much tonight, but it will be nice to see hockey being played after a long off-season of NBA/NFL CBA talks. If you think that was painful, wait until next summer when Bettman and company get back in the negotiating room…. But that is a story for another day.
The Penguins have announced their third jersey schedule, but what is more interesting is the fact that they have made last year’s Winter Classic dark blues the official third jersey. That won’t sit well with many fans who were a bit disappointed with the jerseys upon their unveiling last fall.
Personally, the more I saw the jersey last season, the more that it grew on me. In fact, I would say that by the end of the season I actually liked it quite a bit.
