The Penguins have announced their third jersey schedule, but what is more interesting is the fact that they have made last year’s Winter Classic dark blues the official third jersey. That won’t sit well with many fans who were a bit disappointed with the jerseys upon their unveiling last fall.
Personally, the more I saw the jersey last season, the more that it grew on me. In fact, I would say that by the end of the season I actually liked it quite a bit.
The dark blue “throwback” jersey that was worn against the Capitals on January 1, 2011 will make it’s 2011-12 debut on October 15th as the Penguins face-off against the Buffalo Sabres at the Consol Energy Center.
Though the Penguins press release cites a growing popularity amongst fans as the reason for the switch, it probably had a bit more to do with the fact that the team wanted to get a bit more than three games (the jerseys were worn in two home games following the Winter Classic last season) out of the jerseys that they spent so much time and effort designing.
“Fans have told us they love the new look, the new shade of blue, and the blending of different eras of Penguins hockey,” said James Santilli, the team’s vice president of marketing. “The light-blue jersey that we’ve worn as our third jersey since the 2008 Winter Classic always will be an important part of Penguins history, but we thought it was time to embrace this latest edition of the Winter Classic jersey.”
For those who may be unfamiliar with the jersey design, they feature the team’s original logo from 1967—a skating penguin wearing a scarf.
The dates in which the thirds will be worn are as follows:
Oct. 15 Buffalo
Oct. 27 NY Islanders
Nov. 15 Colorado
Nov. 25 Ottawa
Dec. 27 Carolina
Jan. 6 NY Rangers
Jan. 7 New Jersey
Jan. 20 Montreal
Feb. 11 Winnipeg
Feb. 12 Tampa Bay
Mar. 7 Toronto
Mar. 22 Nashville
The jerseys are now available for purchase at Dick’s Sporting Goods stores and at the PensGear store at the Consol Energy Center.
