Winsome

Brad Stuart hasn't given anyone reason to regret that he's a Shark again, but last night he made a particular splash with some extra gritty play and a charming grin to show off the dental work he got during the game.  Stuart made an excellent ambassador for a team that had just scrambled to a shootout win after dropping a two goal lead.

The Sharks were outshot (33-22 in regulation), out chanced, and generally out-played through much of the game, but how can you be angry when Stuey lost a tooth and hardly missed a beat?  Not to mention the short-handed goal from Adam Burish (which Stuart also made possible) and Scott Gomez finally scoring.  The Sharks still make me wonder.

Happy day, through a glass darkly

Tuesday afternoon, I heard Walking on Sunshine on the radio and it stuck in my head. I heard a whole lot of songs after that, but I couldn't wash it out. I also felt unaccountably cheerful, sort of the way the Sharks looked at the morning skate. Part of me thought them looking jolly was an ill omen, the way it was the last time I noticed that, before the Ducks beat them some time last season.

Of course, there is no good reason to not be cheerful when you're thinking about a hockey game.  Win or lose, it's still a hockey game and the whole point of the thing is to have fun and make people happy.  Maybe the sun shining and the fluffy merry nature of sport and entertainment would not be suppressed.

It was still derned uncomfortable, being all bouncy happy for no good reason.

Everyone’s a critic

“Any reviewer who expresses rage and loathing for a novel is preposterous. He or she is like a person who has put on full armor and attacked a hot fudge sundae.”
-Kurt Vonnegut

I once had a professor explain the difference between criticism and criticising.  The first is an attentive analysis of the work, the second is just saying mean things.  Obviously that's not how he put it, but it works.  At times like these, the lines blur.  I tried to watch the Sharks play in Dallas without judging.  I started out okay, but I couldn't hold the line:

Couture from second line center to top line winger. Marleau and Pavelski to the second line.  Gomez from healthy scratch to second line center. Kennedy from third line to fourth, Desi back to center, Burish back to the wing.  What a difference some badly-timed roughhousing makes.

Okay, I shouldn't count the Kennedy move as a result of Clowe being out.  That was probably just Sheppard returning to his rightful place on the only line that McLellan didn't dismantle.

Swim. The fall didn’t kill you

The Sharks eased into the end of that winning streak.  There was no sudden crash, though the Ducks game certainly came close.  The team went through a nice smooth arc: Win, WIN, WIN, Win, win, shootout win, shootout win... loss.  See how they kept getting closer to losing?  If you want to nitpick, I guess you could say they are due a regulation loss but there's no need to jump off that bridge yet.  We saw it coming, we had a sense of what the end would feel like, no shock here.

Considering how many lineup changes McLellan made, I thought the Sharks played pretty well against the Predators.  I think more players played better than in the last couple of games.  That doesn't always happen when you change three of four lines, two of three defense pairings, and add a couple guys to the lineup.  There were mistakes, but the most glaring were redeemed by their makers.

The Predators are not an easy team for the Sharks to play.  The Sharks like to be able to play, not scuffle endlessly in the corners and creep up and down the ice.  But they did pretty well.  If you put aside the stuff of nightmares that the non-goal from Martin Havlat was, the Sharks nearly won in regulation.  That isn't to say losing is okay, or that the Sharks didn't.  But the fact of that chance means that the team was not playing badly.  It was a dumb error, but that's all it was. It wasn't the game-defining event that it very well could have been.

A busy road trip for the Sharks

Two games, two cities, two wins by three goals each, a new player.  Busy few days for the Sharks.

Such games can make a fan base hungry like an infusion of MSG.  Raise the bar that way and folks are more happy than grateful.  They say things like "where were these Sharks last season?"  Ten goals in two games?  Two multi-goal games for Marleau?  Goals from Boyle in both games?  Six goals in one period?

Edmonton.  Calgary.  Still, better to win than lose, and winning with authority is best.  Do we thank the new coaches?  Do we thank the fact that the players have been chomping at the bit to get going for months now?  I feel the need to thank someone, everyone for the way the Sharks looked.

How 'bout that new penalty kill?  Um... maybe the team should avoid taking penalties and it won't matter so much.  But of all the things the team was doing, that was the most new thing, so I'm willing to be a little patient.
