Even Steven, don’t wait for Nate

The Sharks recalled Matt Pelech again, and placed James Sheppard on IR.  That last is based on the Sharks' online roster, which I'm not sure I can rely on.  Tim Kennedy has gone missing from that same roster, but maybe he wasn't there to begin with.  I haven't been checking closely.  I only checked today to find out why they needed  Pelech again.  Kennedy isn't on today's AHL transactions list so he could be anywhere except in the AHL.  I like to think it's a webmaster omission, because without him the Sharks only have twelve forwards available and that's not great.  There's so much that isn't great in Shark territory right now, it is only natural that injuries would pile on.

Sometimes you *#$%@& up.  Sometimes that's all that happens, you hardly notice it happened.  Other times, you *#$%@& up and all the bad things that could happen slam you from behind like a twenty car pile-up.  Those cars are full of your past mistakes, the missed steps and continuing shortcomings.  Way in the back, there's a minivan carrying other people's issues. They're screaming bloody murder over damage to their Aerostar, because it's just one of those times.

A busy road trip for the Sharks

Two games, two cities, two wins by three goals each, a new player.  Busy few days for the Sharks.

Such games can make a fan base hungry like an infusion of MSG.  Raise the bar that way and folks are more happy than grateful.  They say things like "where were these Sharks last season?"  Ten goals in two games?  Two multi-goal games for Marleau?  Goals from Boyle in both games?  Six goals in one period?

Edmonton.  Calgary.  Still, better to win than lose, and winning with authority is best.  Do we thank the new coaches?  Do we thank the fact that the players have been chomping at the bit to get going for months now?  I feel the need to thank someone, everyone for the way the Sharks looked.

How 'bout that new penalty kill?  Um... maybe the team should avoid taking penalties and it won't matter so much.  But of all the things the team was doing, that was the most new thing, so I'm willing to be a little patient.

The glass wall

The names of the players on the mostly final Sharks roster are out there by now. By association, the names of the players who were sent back down are also known to Sharks fans: John McCarthy, Bracken Kearns, Matt Pelech, and Matt Tennyson.  The Worcester Sharks are playing right now. Listen in here.

Yesterday a Worcester player was sent down to the ECHL: Sacha Guimond.  He had been called up from the Bulls, but due to a recent trade involving the Bulls captain Justin Bowers and the rights to Guimond, the young defenseman won't be coming back to San Francisco.  Instead he's going to play with the Gwinnett Gladiators, to hone his skills and await another shot at the AHL. Because he was originally a Bulls prospect and not a Sharks prospect, he could in theory be called up by any team.  He was in Worcester on a PTO.

That has to be frustrating.  There you are, working away, trying to do a good job, feeling like you're part of the team, there's laughter and uniforms and a budding understand of how things work.  Busy busy busy you are, so busy you have no idea how you ended up wrapped around that stanchion.  You suppose it must somehow be your fault, you should have seen it coming, did someone push you there?   And where did that blood come from?  Is it pumping or merely seeping?

Sharks camp day two: “As quick as we start”

Can Sharks fans expect anything different from the mostly same Sharks as last season?  This is a question many have asked now, but to my mind it misses an important point.  This season is not last season, it would not be last season even if it were not an insanely compressed season.  This is now, that was then.  Even old habits do not manifest themselves in exactly the same way as they did yesterday.  The team is going into the unknown, without much time to prepare.  If I don't know where I'm going or what will happen there, I will always grab the old horse, the one I've known for years.

That old horse is right out in the field, I still throw a saddle on him whenever I have to ride without notice.  He is a fractious beast, headstrong and not terribly well-mannered, but I know him. I know a lot, he knows a lot, together I trust us to cope with whatever the unknown throws at us.  I cannot imagine why anyone would chose differently.

I have seen some say that young teams will have the edge in this short race, but I don't buy it.  Go with what you know when heading into unknown territory.  Todd McLellan, without making the equine comparison, said the same thing:

Training camp opens: it’ll be over before you know it

Are the Sharks ready?  Is anyone?

I had to decide not to go to training camp today since I had plans to go with friends to a Bulls game.  It takes us months to find a date that works for all of us, so I don't have regrets there.  But I am cranky that the Sharks couldn't skate early enough for me to do both.  It irked me that Flyers and Red Wings had volunteered to do physicals yesterday, and as far as I know Sharks didn't.  My crankiness is no doubt amplified by eager impatience for this season to get going.

Dan Boyle explained that this eagerness is shared by the players.  They can't truly know if they are ready either:

I did the best that I could to stay in shape... as much as you try, I think you need to play games to get into game shape.  It may take a week or two but... Everybody's so excited to be playing, I think adrenaline will kick in and this was just such a miserable summer for everyone so we're all excited to be back on the ice.  It should be a pretty exciting start to the season.

Last games of 2012

There are games going on today in the AHL, and the Worcester Sharks will be in one of them.  They play tonight at 7 EST against the Monarchs.  The Worcester Sharks' Friday game got some attention for suspense and spectacle, with the highlight goal from James Sheppard and the tenacity of Matsumoto to keep after that game winner.  But their Saturday game was memorable too, with Mashinter scoring after a very long dry spell, and a game winner on top of it.  Unfortunately, Sena Acolatse is likely to be out for some time, after being injured in that game.

The Bulls' last game of the year rivaled the season opener for attendance (8,000+), and they won handily to boot.  The Bulls owed Vegas one, after that regrettable visit to Nevada last month. That was a close game but it shouldn't have been.  With Scott Langdon back in the lineup, the team grabbed an early lead and went on to win 4-1.  Hans Benson was also back, and he left a mark or two on the game. Speaking of back in the lineup, or the lineup in general:

@Guimond15: "Flying all night ! Back in san francisco tomorrow #freshmind #misstheboys #playoffhockeynow"

Get a little crazy

Marleau, Pavelski and Niemi are the first on the ice.  Marleau sprinkles pucks around one end of the rink, gives the bag to Niemi, who takes it to the other end.  Pavelski and Marleau start shooting, others come out on the ice.

McGinn begins doing goalie drills with Niemi, while others do shooting and tipping drills.

I check Twitter.  When I look up, Marleau and Pavelski have left.  It’s an optional skate I guess.

Boyle is there, smiling.

Clowe is there too, visorless. I think he looks sheepish without it but I must be projecting, imagining he knows he should wear one.  I’m sure he doesn’t think so.  I hope his head is as hard as it seems.  Sigh.

Welcome to the Year of the Dragon

Luck and legend distinguish the Dragon from the other symbols in the Chinese and Mongolian zodiac.  It is said to be the very luckiest birth year, the sign of the emperor.  Unlike the other symbols, a dragon is not the sort of critter most of us will see in our lifetimes.  Since there are twelve signs in this system, that is a little surprising.  The year starts today and ends around this time in 2013.

As someone who grew up in San Francisco, I guess I should say something about the Niners.  They lost.  Bummer for Niners fans.  I wasn’t all that anxious for them to win because I feel that trips to championship finals disperse geographically in such a way that if the Niners had gone on, this would have been bad news for the Sharks.  Look what happened with the Giants- the other Giants I mean.  Condolences to Niners fans, may the loss not be in vain.

The Sharks begin the year in Edmonton.  I don’t know if any of them attended a parade, but a big spectacle like an NHL game should do.  Wow… that would be cool, if someone brought a paper and silk dragon to the game and sent it around the stands… I know, that probably won’t happen.
