Brad Stuart hasn't given anyone reason to regret that he's a Shark again, but last night he made a particular splash with some extra gritty play and a charming grin to show off the dental work he got during the game. Stuart made an excellent ambassador for a team that had just scrambled to a shootout win after dropping a two goal lead.
The Sharks were outshot (33-22 in regulation), out chanced, and generally out-played through much of the game, but how can you be angry when Stuey lost a tooth and hardly missed a beat? Not to mention the short-handed goal from Adam Burish (which Stuart also made possible) and Scott Gomez finally scoring. The Sharks still make me wonder.

Flatlining, or where did the fourth go?

That's six. I hate to think what the farmer's new bride would do to the person who crossed her six times, but I'm sort of relieved that the Sharks got this out of the way. If they were mystified about why they lost again, after doing so many things so much better, well, it could not have happened any other way. Once they lost five, the sixth loss was going to will itself into being no matter what. That's a good thing, it means that this season isn't last season, it's more like the two seasons before the 2011-12 black hole.
TJ Galiardi, Adam Burish, and Martin Havlat... What in the world happened while I was testing out America One Sports? When I said the Sharks should just play their game, just go out there and do what they know how to do, I wasn't including Todd McLellan in that freestyle instruction. On the other hand, putting that line together touched on something I've been wondering about for years now: why have a traditional fourth line?

The reports about Jason Demers and Brent Burns should be considered positive developments. The reports I mean are things like:
Jason Demers practiced with the team and took line rushes with Matt Irwin this morning while Nick Petrecki and Brent Burns skated together. Still, McLellan stopped short of declaring Demers good-to-go. -Working the Corners
Even if Demers isn't expected to play tonight, he isn't far off. With him available to play, the team will have choices to make but they are good choices. Like sitting Sheppard to make room for Gomez, it is more a wealth of riches than a shortage of options.
Brent Burns, while probably not as close to playing as Demers, also showed visible improvement. His merely being in the practice tells us that. Still, what he told David Pollak doesn't inspire confidence:

Profits, losses and other lack of Sharks news

There’s nothing to report from Shark Territory, but it’s been a long time since I posted anything so here are some thoughts on the latest lack of news.
A little over a week ago, Kevin Kurz asked if the Sharks owners should be allowed to profit from their NHL team. I winced at the word “allowed.” Lyle Richardson asked why the team is not profitable in his article from the 18th. But to ask if the owners should be allowed to make money is absurd. There is no law, rule or viable lobby that argues team owners should not be allowed to profit from their teams. Of course NHL teams are for-profit ventures. That said, there’s a difference between allowing someone to do something and finding ways to help them do it.
It gets sticky in terms of PR (which owners may or may not actually care about) when you cry poverty and you aren’t poor, and then try to make your employees pay for your unsatisfactory profits. Whether the NHL thinks they will benefit from a more closely regulated expense system or not, they had time under the 2005 CBA to figure out what a cap system can and can’t do to save owners from each other.

NHL Free Agency 2012, Day One
Today started off pretty well for the sort of spectator I am. I like to track the movements of ex-Sharks as well as the arrival of new Sharks and really anyone who has ever caught my attention. Torrey Mitchell promptly signed with Minnesota, I got giddy over a Flyers signing, and Brad Staubitz went to Anaheim. Although he has never played for “my” teams, I was happy about Yann Danis being signed by the Oilers. I like to hear about players finding a place.
Then came news that the Sharks had signed Adam Burish. It’s all fun and games until my team actually makes a move, then it becomes frantic serious. It is very inconvenient that the NHL site makes it so you can’t find a player’s page through “Player Search” unless he is under contract with a team. You can still find him through a stats search but why they have to break his page between contracts is a mystery.
