As praise for the Kings is heaped onto the web, one of the explanations that keeps being presented is the acquisition of Jeff Carter. I agree, if he and Richards are such great buddies, playing together can’t hurt. Happy players play better.
Oh, they don’t mean that? They mean Carter made the top six so much better? Oh. Here I was getting used to the happy notion that teams know they need more than two lines to really do the job. I guess we’re back to only needing a top six. Please tell me GMs aren’t really thinking that way anymore. Please tell me it’s just confused people trying to make sense of the LA Kings suddenly getting their act together.
Kevin Kurz did some regular season grades for the players. One that jumped out at me was the one for Tommy Wingels:
Tommy Wingels’ development made Jamie McGinn expendable in the eyes of management, and it’s easy to see why. Wingels shows maturity well beyond his years, both on and off the ice, and could very well crack the top two lines next season… —Kevin Kurz
For that glowing review Wingels got a B. I don’t care about the grade so much as the assumption that Wingels made McGinn expendable and that this is easy to understand. I don’t know if Kurz really knows what Doug Wilson was thinking, but if that is what he was thinking, dios mio.
Maybe I’m greedy to a fault but I would have kept both of them. Imagine, just imagine a third line with such qualities as those, so relatively inexpensive, at least until McGinn’s next contract was negotiated. A third line that would make the fourth line worthy of more than their usual minutes. Imagine a team that could come to rely on, instead of just hope for, scoring depth. The thought makes me little light headed.
Which must mean it’s a pipe dream, an opium pipe dream. Good thing too, the opium dulls the pain of banging my head against the desk.

About Petshark: Talking Stick
Native of Northern California. Hockey fan since 1998... sort of... there's a hiatus in there that I still can't explain.
I want to know about anything and everything related to the sport and the spectacle. I watch, I react, I write it down.
My interest in the Sharks was initially a matter of geographic convenience and regional loyalty because that seemed to be how it worked. I had no prior interest (at all-- AT ALL) in professional sports of any kind. When I met hockey, it might have set off a chain reaction of general sports fandom. It hasn't, I don't think it will. At all.
Since then, that interest developed into full blown (mostly sort of usually almost completely) exclusive loyalty to the Sharks.
I started blogging a couple years ago on wordpress. I still occasionally put things there that I don't think fit here because they are not about the Sharks. Wherever my words wander, here on Kuklas Korner, they will (usually) hang on to a teal thread.
