Enough lockout non-news

There's a theory that refusing to give voice to your dark thoughts is more productive than letting rants run riot.  I'm going to try that.  The NHL CBA negotiations are going nowhere, both sides look kind of stupid, childish and not the least concerned with whether or not we see any NHL hockey this season.  That wasn't a rant, just a brief statement of fact.  A more comprehensive discussion of the situation can be found here from Elliotte Friedman.

Here are some bits of info I've picked up about players and teams that matter in my hockey universe: Back on September 29th, Logan Couture's team beat Joe Thornton's now Rick Nashless team in Switzerland:

@Logancouture: Big win for @OfficialGSHC. Also bragging rights over the big guy!

Jason Demers is getting rave (or maybe just good) reviews in Finland.  Really it's hard to get the details via Google Translate and I won't apologize for not speaking Finnish.  I hear it is a very difficult language.

Per Kevin Kurz, Tommy Wingels is off to Finland, but not to the same league as Demers is playing in.

Patrick Marleau and Ryane Clowe are doing high altitude training with Andy O'Brien and some other familiar faces:

@bodybyobrien: Team Blue: Crosby,Marleau,Gagner,Horcoff,Cogliano,Purcell,Malone,E.Johnson,Pardy,Budaj
@bodybyobrien: Team White: Kobasew,Clarkson,Duchene,Stamkos,Clowe,Cleary,Myers,Whitney,Yandle,Dubnyk
@bodybyobrien: Day 1: Team Blue dominated with easy wins in basketball and on-ice. White came back with a close win in Golf.

The Sharks management and coaching staff packed up and went to Worcester to observe training camp.  I'm a little angry at NHL teams right now, so I'll just post a link to Dan Rusanowsky's observations on Worcester trainging camp.  Why am I angry?  The saying "if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem" comes to mind.

The San Francisco Bulls are playing their first exhibition game tonight at the Cow Palace.  This will give them a chance to meet all the guys from the Stockton Thunder before they meet in the regular season on November 9th.

SF Bulls players will also be doing a meet and greet at the Serramonte shopping center this Saturday.  More on that can be found at SFBulls.com.

The Bulls roster will include some guys from Worcester training camp:

@PollakOnSharks: SF Bulls getting first 3 players through #Sjsharks affiliation: G Taylor Nelson reassigned; F Taylor Carnevale, F Alex Tuckerman released.

The SRJC Polar Bears (ACHA Div III) are on a road trip that made a couple of stops in Colorado and will wind up in Redwood City playing Stanford on Friday.  They will play at home in Santa Rosa on the 13th and the 20th.

Santa Rosa lost both games in Colorado (8-9 to Colorado University, 2-4 to Colorado State University) but made valiant comeback attempts in both cases.  They started the season by defeating UC Berkeley 10-7 and Sacramento State 20-2.  League parity really is overrated.

ESPN3 may or may not have agreed to show some KHL games featuring locked out NHL players. In any case, some were disappointed by not being able to see the first game today.  Bummer.  I wish I had access to ESPN3.  Or maybe not.  The KHL is said to be in discussions with other networks as well.  We can only hope that gets resolved shortly.

Presumably, the NHL will get around to announcing the cancellation of regular season games soon.  I'm thinking this would be a good time to go check out Euro hockey.  No rush of course.  It looks like the errant NHLers will be abroad for some time, and there are a bunch of them:

@MaStrozyk: Europe's 104 #NHL players divided by country: CZE 23; RUS & SUI 18; FIN 13; SWE 9; GER 6; AUT, UKR, SVK, BLR 3; KAZ 2; LAT, GBR 1, SVK 1

That list will certainly grow.

About Petshark: Talking Stick

Native of Northern California.  Hockey fan since 1998... sort of... there's a hiatus in there that I still can't explain.

I want to know about anything and everything related to the sport and the spectacle.  I watch, I react, I write it down.

My interest in the Sharks was initially a matter of geographic convenience and regional loyalty because that seemed to be how it worked.  I had no prior interest (at all-- AT ALL) in professional sports of any kind.  When I met hockey, it might have set off a chain reaction of general sports fandom.  It hasn't, I don't think it will.  At all.

Since then, that interest developed into full blown (mostly sort of usually almost completely) exclusive loyalty to the Sharks.

I started blogging a couple years ago on wordpress. I still occasionally put things there that I don't think fit here because they are not about the Sharks. Wherever my words wander, here on Kuklas Korner, they will (usually) hang on to a teal thread.

I can be found in cyberspace on Twitter @petshark47, or emailed at talkingstick@petshark.net
