Petshark: Talking Stick

Brian Elliott has a good game

I tune in a little late and then start writing because if the Sharks lose I hate writing about it, better to start before it happens.  I see the lineups flash across the screen.

Wow, I did not see that coming, 7D and no Wingels.  Mitchell on the second line I didn’t think about but I can see how that’s an option.  Andrew Murray up on the the third line.  Well, he has been very steady.

Andrew Murray gets smushed, Clowe takes issue with that.  Randy says we would like to get the power play but you also like to see Clowe standing up for his teammate.  Hm.  I’ll take the power play for 2, Randy.  Oh well.

Just as I’m mulling that over, Demers gives the puck away, missing two Sharks to do so. It isn’t technically a breakaway but D’Agostini is all alone out there against Greiss, with plenty of time.

1-0 Blues.

I start to hope a slow start to the game might be a good thing for the Sharks.  Those fast starts didn’t guarantee anything.

Seeing Elliott in net surprises me.  I sort of like Elliott.  Anyone who played so long for that Sens team gets a sympathy vote from me.  But it doesn’t seem to matter who is in net for the Blues right now.  He doesn’t have a lot to do yet.

Oh, there, he got to grab one.  Good for him.  I don’t think it was going in anyway.

Uh oh, so much for A Murray not taking penalties as a Shark.  Ugh.  Go pk.

I know Handzus needs to rest but when he leaves the ice during the pk I get all nervous.  Oh, there’s that White/Vandermeer combo for the pk.  That should offer some reassurance.  They survive but the puck is like a boulder that the Sharks can’t seem roll up the hill.

Pavs makes a nice move to get the puck to Thornton who promptly gives it away.  Are they sure Marleau didn’t bring that bug back to the dressing room after all?  Thornton tries to fix things after a grinding shift in the defensive zone by sending the puck out but he ices it.  Ugh, already the timeout is needed.

Well, if it’s needed, it’s needed.  Not only are they tired but they’re all discombobulated again.  They come back out and ice it again.

Oh dear oh dear oh dear.

They finally get to change lines, but Winchester takes a penalty.

Half way through that, Handzus gets the puck out.

Randy and Drew discuss the internet.  I’ve been avoiding Twitter since 4pm, because I have been running behind watching everything and wanted to avoid spoilers.  I miss my web buddies.  The web chatter adds something to watching a game.

I’m loosing heart, getting all bummed about failed power plays and not having anyone to talk to about it when Handzus and Clowe get in there and score.  Handzus is my hero.  Appropriate ritual acts to be determined.  Not fond of the stuff the original Zeus was into but I’m sure Zus is a kinder, gentler deity.

A nice little play there about 5 mins into the second.  Just keeping it in the zone for a while looks like a positive sign to me.  Elliott stops that, interrupting the Sharks as they just start to figure it out.  I think I like him a little less.

Almost halfway through the second period, where are the lines now?

It takes a while for me to see what’s up with that because the top line won’t leave the zone and get off the ice.  This is distracting in a good way.

The second line seems intact, Mitchell there with Clowe and Couture.

Now Desi and Handzus and Winchester.  Wait, what?

I guess when you are short one forward things get a little fluid.

The Sharks are winning on the shot clock again…

Oh, now on the scoreboard too.  Clowe in the thick of it again, this time he gets the credit, for a second, then maybe Couture… then Burns.  Whatever.  Clowe wreaking some useful havoc, everyone paying attention now.

2-1 Sharks.

It is far better to be so far ahead on the shot clock 15 minutes into the second than at any time in the first.

It is critical to beat the Blues.  Come on, you have to say that at least once during a game against St. Louis.  The Sharks have to beat the Blues because to lose to them is inconsistent with this new fast starting souped-up team, this team that can cope with Marleau playing a little green around the gills, their backup goalie in net, and ...

Wait, why are the Sharks on a pk?  Oh, stupid delay of game.  That must have been a bad call, because they say it was Handzus and in light of his recent deification, I cannot accept it as truth.

While I contemplate that, the Sharks get a nice short-handed rush.  They kill the penalty off and someone levels Handzus.  Whoever that was, rain and gloomy skies will follow him everywhere, and a rash of stubbed toes.  Perhaps a foot fungus.  He will not know why this is, but I will.

The Sharks end the period in a crazy defensive scramble.  Time expires, Randy says the period comes mercifully to an end.  Merciful yes, but also the will of Zus.

At the start of the 3rd, the Blues get a chance but Greiss deflects it nicely right to Couture.  Greiss really does seem to be very composed.  He has a knack for sending the puck somewhere safe, not so much handling it but by kicking it or blocking it out.  Maybe he’s doing that better in this game than the previous two.  I hope this means more rest for Niemi through the course of the season.

Oh.  Uck.  Husky puts one in off the post, through traffic.  Rude. And bad Sharks for screening your goalie.  Block it or let him see it.

There’s another nice little kick from Greiss that puts the puck right on Mitchell’s stick.  Ok, that is not a coincidence.  That is a very useful trick.

But it doesn’t work on a 3 on 2.

Oh dear oh dear oh dear.

3-2 Blues.

Come on Sharks, you have to sort this out.

Pavs and Marleau get a good 2 on 1 chance, but Elliott, blast him, is right there.  Maybe Marleau could have been a little more creative but hey, he’s sick.

Randy points out that this is 3 goals on just 18 shots.  That sounds absolutely dismal for Greiss.  It doesn’t sound like a fair assessment at all.  I’ll blame Burns.  Why not.

This is not what I wanted.  I’m not an adrenaline junky.  As soon as the team falls behind I curl up in a ball of despair.  I know hockey players are supposed to keep their spirits up, not freak out.  I’m not a hockey player.  Do as I say, not as I do.

Sharks power play.  Good job, Burns, getting tripped there.

Everyone is trying to get the puck to Zus.  Boyle has a beautiful chance but takes a second too long.  See, they were right the first time, give it to Zus.

It deteriorates from there.  More chances, but not enough time.

It totally sucks to get beat by the Blues.  I guess I should be happy for Elliott since I was a fan of his until about 2 hours ago.  Good for you, Mr. Elliott.  Now go away.

Oh, look, Sateri was sent to Stockton.  Well, an infinite number of monkeys at typewriters… I’m bound to get a few right now and then.

About Petshark: Talking Stick

Native of Northern California.  Hockey fan since 1998... sort of... there's a hiatus in there that I still can't explain.

I want to know about anything and everything related to the sport and the spectacle.  I watch, I react, I write it down.

My interest in the Sharks was initially a matter of geographic convenience and regional loyalty because that seemed to be how it worked.  I had no prior interest (at all-- AT ALL) in professional sports of any kind.  When I met hockey, it might have set off a chain reaction of general sports fandom.  It hasn't, I don't think it will.  At all.

Since then, that interest developed into full blown (mostly sort of usually almost completely) exclusive loyalty to the Sharks.

I started blogging a couple years ago on wordpress. I still occasionally put things there that I don't think fit here because they are not about the Sharks. Wherever my words wander, here on Kuklas Korner, they will (usually) hang on to a teal thread.
