AHL/ECHL Monday mentions, Feb 11

Last week, the Worcester Sharks played two games in Newfoundland against the Ice Caps.  The Sharks won both games, 3-2 and 4-0.

Tuesday's game was a nail-biter.  Daniil Tarasov opened the scoring at 1:32 of the first with assists from Tim Kennedy and Bracken Kearns.  The Sharks gave up a short-handed goal to Jason Jaffrey (assist to Maxime Macenauer) in the middle of that period.  Then the teams went scoreless through the second, each team taking an assortment of penalties.  At 6:31 of the third period, Jaffrey scored a power play goal for St. John's (assists to Raymond Sawada and Derek Meech).  The Sharks didn't get that goal back until 16:42, with a power play goal from Bracken Kearns (assists to Tim Kennedy and Denny Urban).  Less than two minutes later, Tarasov scored the game winner with 1:31 left in the game (assists to Kearns and Kennedy).  The Sharks scored on one power play out of three and they killed four of five penalties.  Harri Sateri made 30 saves for the win, Eddie Pasquale made 29 saves for the Ice Caps.

Wednesday's game was a terrible disappointment for the home team.  Tarasov opened the scoring again, but not until the middle of the second (assists to Kennedy and Nick Petrecki).  That was Tarasov's sixth goal of the season.  At 17:41 of the same period, St. John's took two penalties in the space of five seconds, giving the Sharks a two man advantage.  It took the Sharks a little over a minute to get organized, and then they scored two power play goals in 30 seconds.  The five on three goal went to Bracken Kearns (assists to Urban and Kennedy), the five on four goal was John McCarthy's sixth of the season (assists to Matt Tennyson and Matt Pelech.)  In the middle of the third period, McCarthy score his second goal of the game:

@210Darryl: It's John McCarthy's first multi-goal game since scoring both goals in a 2-0 #WorSharks victory over Manchester on 4/1/11

Here are some highlights of that game, thanks to @Jon_Allred for sharing them on Twitter.  Oh, there were some penalties too, 125 penalty minutes worth:

Harri Sateri made 21 saves for the shutout, Eddie Pasquale made 30 saves for the Ice Caps.

Due to Winter Storm Nemo, their Sunday game in Connecticut was rescheduled.

The Worcester Sharks are now third in the AHL's Atlantic Division, eighth in the Eastern Conference.

Nick Petrecki cleared waivers Sunday and was assigned to the Worcester Sharks.  That makes their blue line a little crowded now, so it's no surprise that Mikael Tam has been sent back to the San Francisco Bulls:

@SFBulls: D-man Mikael Tam loaned to the #SFBulls. Will join the team in Idaho.

Matt Pelech has also been called up by the San Jose Sharks.  Evidently he is expected to play as a forward in place of Andrew Desjardins who is still out with the flu.  Pelech was at Sharks training camp as a defenseman, but he has played some games as a forward for Worcester.  It would be very surprising indeed if he were being called up as a defenseman, with Matt Irwin and Douglas Murray already sitting.  His arrival looks bad for T.J. Galiardi, or there could be injuries lurking.

In all honesty, the choice has me scratching my head.  He doesn't jump out at me as the obvious player to call up as a replacement forward.

Tyson Sexsmith, ex-Worcester Sharks goalie, was with the Abbostford Heat for a day:

@TheGoalieGuild: Seeing Tyson Sexsmith has signed in Abbotsford. Was playing in the KHL. Former Sharks prospect and AHL All-Star.
@PollakOnSharks: RT @TEAM1040 The @abbotsfordheat have released Tyson Sexsmith after 1-game trial with team. He's heading to Italy to play for Bolzano Foxes

Forward Michael Pelech was released and caught again:

@210Darryl: Michael Pelech, who played 3 games with the #WorSharks in mid-January, has signed a PTO with the #CTWhale. #AHL

The San Francisco Bulls had an eventful week, winning just one game Saturday.  they are sitting at eighth in the Western Conference of the ECHL, and they should be safe there as long as Bakersfield doesn't catch them.  They will have to lose a lot of games to let that happen.

Wednesday they were shut out 5-0 by Las Vegas.  Friday, they came back from a 3-0 deficit in the second half of the third period to lose in a shootout.  It was a loss they could live with, and a point against the league-leading Ontario Reign.  Ontario’s Chris Carrozzi made 23 saves, Taylor Nelson made 24 for the Bulls.  Dean Ouellet, Jordan Morrison and Cody Carlson scored for the Bulls, Ontario goals were scored by Kyle Kraemer (2) and Mario Lamoureux.

Saturday, the Bulls started off a little shaky but pulled out a 3-1 win against the Bakersfield Condors.  They turned around Sunday to play a very strong offensive game that they lost 4-2.  Shot counts don't always tell the story of a game but this one jumps out at you: 42-15 Bulls.  Taylor Nelson was out with the flu, or he would have been playing his third game in three days.  Heemskerk, recently activated from injured reserve, was ill prepared for the strange, unbalanced game.  Two of the goals against were scored during odd man rushes, a third was short-handed.

Marek Viedensky made his long awaited return Friday, and Saturday he scored the game winning goal.  Peter Sivak missed Friday's game with the flu, but Sunday he scored all the goals for the Bulls.

As mentioned above, Mikael Tam will be joining the Bulls in Idaho where they will play Tuesday and Wednesday.  They return for home and home games against the Thunder, beginning in Stockton on Saturday.

Rylan Galiardi has not yet been cleared to practice due to post concussion symptoms.  He has been in the press box for the last couple of games, which could be considered progress since he wasn't there earlier.

Late Edit: I almost forgot this news from last night:

@GackleReport: Sources with @SFBulls confirm that Scott Langdon will be named team captain tomorrow. Dean Ouellet will grab an A, joining J-Mo and Benson

About Petshark: Talking Stick

Native of Northern California.  Hockey fan since 1998... sort of... there's a hiatus in there that I still can't explain.

I want to know about anything and everything related to the sport and the spectacle.  I watch, I react, I write it down.

My interest in the Sharks was initially a matter of geographic convenience and regional loyalty because that seemed to be how it worked.  I had no prior interest (at all-- AT ALL) in professional sports of any kind.  When I met hockey, it might have set off a chain reaction of general sports fandom.  It hasn't, I don't think it will.  At all.

Since then, that interest developed into full blown (mostly sort of usually almost completely) exclusive loyalty to the Sharks.

I started blogging a couple years ago on wordpress. I still occasionally put things there that I don't think fit here because they are not about the Sharks. Wherever my words wander, here on Kuklas Korner, they will (usually) hang on to a teal thread.

I can be found in cyberspace on Twitter @petshark47, or emailed at talkingstick@petshark.net
