“In Stu we trust,” that has been the catch phrase in Edmonton every spring since the Oilers first drafted first overall. After another miserable season and with the Taylor or Tyler decision before the team, fans were torn. Some were on Team Taylor, some Team Tyler and all cheered for the Oilers to take a difference maker and turn the team around. Because no one seemed to have a clear idea of what would happen, nor who would be the better player everyone decided to keep their favourite in mind but trust that Oilers’ head of amateur scouting, Stu MacGregor and his team would pick the right player. But what about now, two years later?
The NHL entry draft lottery is only 5 days away, and it looks as though the Oilers are going to have another high chance at the number one overall draft pick. With only 2 games to go, the Oilers stand 2 points behind the 27th place Montreal Canadiens, but the Habs aren’t going down without a fight either. And so, it will all come down to the final games this weekend.
With only three games remaining in the Red Deer Rebels’ schedule, the window of opportunity for scouts and fans alike to catch a glimpse of a truly special player before the 2012 NHL entry draft is closing. What you will see if you have the opportunity to watch Mat Dumba play is a gifted puck moving defenceman who is playing big minutes on a team that will hobble across the finish line. Dumba will make the big hits, block the hard shots and make a few of his own. For Dumba the Rebel’s regular season ending is just the first step in what will be a busy and life changing off season.
