The Edmonton Oilers have agreed to terms with GM Steve Tambellini, but they are not saying for how much longer. At least not yet. In a Wednesday morning press release the team merely says:
President of Hockey Operations Kevin Lowe announced today the Edmonton Oilers have agreed to terms on a new contract for General Manager Steve Tambellini.
Kevin Lowe says, “Three years ago we asked Steve to begin a rebuild which we all know hasn’t been easy. However, Oilers fans can take some consolation in the fact that Steve and his staff have acquired some amazing talent which will most definitely be the cornerstone to future sustained success for the Edmonton Oilers.”
The team has taken what seems to be an exceptionally long time to announce this extension, as they also took an exceptionally long time to announce that Tom Renney would no longer be the Oilers’ head coach.
This past season was another one of ups and downs, but ultimately the team didn’t perform as well as the organization and their fans would have liked to have seen. For that, Renney was let go, but Tambellini remains. You can’t exactly expect miracles from the coach, not when it is the GM that builds the team, but there is something to be said about how the tools that are in place were used.
Still, signing both Ben Eager and Darcy Hordichuk last summer seemed redundant and questionable. Then again so did signing Cam Barker just after he had been bought out by Minnesota.
I wouldn’t expect this to be a long term deal, nothing in the field of 5 years, but I also wouldn’t be surprised to hear that it’s 2-3 years. After all, who wants to sign for just one more year and know that they are walking on the knife’s edge?
With only two teams in need of a new head coach, the Edmonton announcement may not be too far behind. Now that Tambellini is officially the GM for the next season, this announcement might be his first order of business.
