According to a couple of Swedish newspapers, ex-Oiler Jason Strudwick has signed with Södertälje SK (SSK) of the Swedish 2nd League, Hockey Allsvenskan.
Strudwick is a new father and when there were not any offers that were a good fit for him and his family through the off season it looked as though Strudwick would take this season off. However, with as far as I can tell, a season ending injury to veteran Stefan Bemström, Strudwick’s presence is needed on the team’s blue line.
“In Strudwick, we get a defense-oriented defenseman who is big, tough, and is recognized good at defending the goal. He has a good first pass, but it is clearly defense game that is his greatest strength” are high words of praise from sports director Per Nygård.
Strudwick defintely brings veteran experience to the team. Strudwick has played 674 NHL games, scored 13 goals, 42 assists and 811 penalty minutes. As Strudwick has not scored since the 2008-09 season with the Oilers, the SSK are not bringing Strudwick in for his goal scoring abilities.
Many fans saw Strudwick as more of a liability by his final games with the Oilers, but the entire Oiler team was struggling through the past two seasons. But, Studwick’s especially played the saddest Oiler minutes over the past two seasons ending each season -18 and -16 respectively, and ending his NHL career (perhaps for now) with -82 total.
Strudwick brings not only expereince but also leadership and has a personality that allows Strudwick to bridge the gap between the vets and the rookies. While with both the Rangers and the Oilers, Strudwick was known for the time he would spend with the younger players, especially playing rockband. Strudwick loves to laugh and sing, and has his own style for both.
I wish Strudwick and his family well in Sweden, Strudwick is also a pillar of the community who was always willing to help out and frequently volunteered his time and efforts to various community projects.
EDIT: At least I wasn’t the only one who made this error. As stated by Swedish Oil writer Martin Lundén “Södertälje were demoted come this season and now find themselves in the Swedish 2nd League, HockeyAllsvenskan”
The main point remains the same, Strudwick to Sweden.
