Oilers lose 3-1 to Avalanche
The Edmonton Oilers’ head coach Tom Renney was not at Rexall place as his team hosted the Colorado Avalanche. Instead, Renney is at home recovering from a concussion for the rest of the weekend. Renney was struck with an errant puck during the morning skate in Toronto February 6th. Since then, Renney has sporadically spoken with the media, but associate coach Ralph Krueger has stepped up to fill in. And so, Renney may now have a better sense of what the fans sit through at home while yelling at their coach and watching the Oilers lose 3-1.
Devan Dubnyk would start in net for the Oilers, but this was far from his best outing. With 47 seconds left in the first period, Dubnyk left his crease to play the puck giving Erik Johnson more than enough space to score the game’s opening goal.
From there, things didn’t get any better for the Oilers.
The Avalanche would score two further goals in the second period, one from Mark Olver and the second was a power play goal from Gabriel Landeskog.
The only relief for the Oilers came when Ryan Jones broke the longest goalless streak of his life, 22 games. This goal puts Jones back on track to score 20 goals this season, but with 7 goals left to reach that mark he may need a couple of multi goal nights.
Otherwise, there wasn’t much to say of the Oilers through 60 minutes. Despite multiple and extended power play opportunities, the Oilers failed to score a power play goal or even get a shot on net during their man advantage.
To put mildly, this game was quite boring. The most exciting/interesting part was in the third period when the Avalanche iced the puck 4 times in 49 seconds.
Avalanche fans certainly had more enjoyment of this game, but surely not much more. With this win, the Avs move to 10th in the west, and the Oilers remain 29th in the league.
Thankfully, the Detroit Red Wings home winning streak was extended yet again Friday night. That should be enough to distract hockey fans from the fact that this game even happened… right?

Although the Oilers have had a difficult past decade… or three, here at Oil Patch, the future looks bright.
