Oilers Sweep Flames in Pre-Season Action and Injury Updates

Oilers beat Flames 3-0
The Edmonton Oilers came up victorious in a home and home series with the Calgary Flames this weekend, much to the delight of Oilers fans. When was the last time anyone was able to say that? Sure it’s just pre-season and these games don’t count, but following injury updates that were far from positive and new injury news for Sam Gagner, many fans will take pleasure where they can get it.

Devan Dubnyk had an outstanding game, earning the shutout and goals from Shawn Horcoff, Linus Omark and Jordan Eberle sealed the deal.

After Teemu Hartikainen played an impressive game that sparked discussion on whether or not Hartikainen could take a spot away from Omark at the beginning of the season, Linus Omark was fantastic Sunday night in Calgary; setting up Horcoff’s goal and earning one for himself.

Gagner Injury Update
Following the game, coach Tom Renney fielded questions on Sam Gagner. It was said that Gagner was scheduled for an MRI on Monday. Despite claims that it didn’t look to be anything major, and MRI tells a different tale to the average person. The results have yet to be released but the other centres attempting to earn a position on the starting roster will need continue to work and battle for a spot. While it seems a certainty that Anton Lander will start this season in Oklahoma City, there is still Gilbert Brule, Eric Belanger, Shawn Horcoff and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins looking to take a position at centre.

Hemsky Injury Update
In happier news, forward Ales Hemsky is set to play his first pre-season game on Tuesday against the Phoenix Coyotes. Hemsky has not played since March and is eager to get on the ice. Hemsky will play tomorrow night on a line with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Ryan Smyth. Because none of these three are known as snipers or shooters, Hemsky joked with the media on Monday “I guess I’m the shooter on the line.”

Teubert Injury Update
Colten Teubert is skating once again, although in a red, no contact practice jersey. Since Ryan Whitney doesn’t appear to be near a return date, any Oilers defenceman who could play NHL minutes is desperately needed. The team will not rush Teubert back to the ice, but with any luck Teubert will be ready to resume play shortly.

Next up, the Oilers host the Phoenix Coyotes in the 3rd final pre-season game.
