Oilers Recall Danis

The Edmonton Oilers have recalled goaltender Yann Danis from the Oklahoma City Barons of the AHL after Nikolai Khabibulin suffered a groin injury during Sunday night’s game against the Vancouver Canucks. According to the Oilers’ official twitter feed, Khabibulin is expected to miss 7-10 days.

Danis won the AHL battle of Alberta in Calgary 4-0

Danis has led the Oklahoma City Barons to top of AHL standings this season with a 1.98 GAA & 0.926 save percentage in 33 games played. With a 21 and 10 record, Danis also leads goaltenders in the AHL.

The Barons have three games this week, and so Olivier Roy has been called up from the Stockton Thunder of the ECHL. With the Stockton Thunder, Roy has a 2.44 GAA and a 0.914 save percentage through 32 games. The Thunder have three goaltenders, but the other two, Thomas Heemskerk and Alex Stalock have played only 14 and 6 games respectively.

Both Danis and Roy have earned their promotions. For Danis, it’s difficult to say how many games he will see. The Oilers are still trying to see where Devan Dubnyk fits into their plans and whether or not they feel that he is their goaltender of the future. And so, although Danis may have earned an NHL start, he may backup Dubnyk unless Dubnyk struggles too much.

The Oilers next game is Tuesday night in Calgary.

About Oil Patch

Lisa McRitchie is a fairly new writer, online at least, but makes up for inexperience with passion for the game of hockey and memories of Mrs. Leskiw’s English AP class; who knew they would pay off one day.

Oil Patch focuses on the Edmonton Oilers, the Edmonton Oil Kings, The Oklahoma City Barons and Team Canada Hockey with game coverage, news updates, speculation and interviews.

Although the Oilers have had a difficult past decade… or three, here at Oil Patch, the future looks bright.
