The Edmonton Oilers have made a couple of moves this week; sending defenceman Jeff Petry to the Oklahoma Barons of the AHL and have recalled right winger Ryan Keller.
Petry is being sent to Oklahoma City to play more minutes, especially since the Barons are missing injured defenceman Taylor Fedun. Fedun broke his femur during a pre-season game in St. Paul Minnesota against the Wild.
Some wonder why Keller received the call before Teemu Hartikainen who had an excellent showing in Edmonton last season. Without having seen any Barons games yet this season, it is hard to say with any certainty why this decision was reached besides looking at the stats.
While both Hartikainen and Keller have played four games, Keller leads the team with his two goals and four assists while Hartikainen has one goal and one assist. It doesn’t seem like a reach to suggest that Barons head coach Todd Nelson spoke highly of Keller’s play so far, it might be difficult to downplay your leading point scorer’s performance.
How long Keller remains in the lineup will be interesting. Centreman Sam Gagner is expected to return to the lineup Saturday against the Rangers andAles Hemsky is still listed as a week and a half.
Jason Gregor of the Team 1260 has said on twitter that Shawn Horcoff may also be battling the flu, while other reports say that he did not participate in morning skate because he took a maintenance day. Hopefully the illness will be limited to a few players and only for a short period of time; the Oilers’ lineup was crippled by the flu two seasons ago.
In tonight’s game against the Wild, Theo Peckham will be the healthy scratch, but Taylor Hall returns to the lineup. Coach Tom Renney says to expect the regulars in the lineup and that Shawn Horcoff is fine.
Dan Tencer of 630 Ched lists the expected lines as:
Taylor Hall - Ryan Nugent-Hopkins - Jordan Eberle
Ryan Smyth - Shawn Horcoff - Ryan Jones
Magnus Paajarvi - Eric Belanger - Linus Omark
Ben Eager - Anton Lander - Lennart Petrell
Ryan Whitney - Corey Potter
Ladislav Smid - Tom Gilbert
Andy Sutton - Cam Barker
Although talking injuries and illness is never fun, it is fun to see yet another Ryan added to the Oilers lineup. With the addition of Keller, the active Ryan count stands at 5.
