Oilers Land Schultz, Have Busy Signing Weekend

The Edmonton Oilers signed a defenceman this morning, but it wasn’t the name that everyone has been waiting for. Early Saturday morning the team announced that they had signed Vancouver Giant defenceman David Musil. Musil was the Oilers second round pick at the 2011 NHL entry draft and while the Oilers didn’t need to sign him for another year since he is almost a lock to return to the Giants, but it is a sign that that the Oilers see him fitting well into their future plans.

But then, as the the afternoon dragged on the news that Justin Schultz had chosen to the sign with the Edmonton Oilers broke, and by the Oilers themselves. Shultz was easily the most sought after UFA of the summer up until this point and becomes the biggest name the Oilers have signed in recent history, bigger even than signing Sheldon Souray.

Now, it looks even smarter that the Oilers passed on defenceman Ryan Murray at this year’s draft and went with Nail Yakupov. Schultz is the equivalent of a top ten pick and for nothing, the team didn’t even have to give up a draft pick or a player like Linus Omark.

In the end it was the fact that the Oilers didn’t have the greatest team that helped them the most. Had the Oilers had a better defence, Schultz would have went with a weaker team. But make no mistake, Schultz will not be able to walk in and single-handedly lead the Oilers to a cup or even the playoffs, but it’s a start.

Hopefully this is just the start of the Oilers moves. Even if they added another big name or two on July 1st, the team roster still needs some work but the signing of Schultz will be an excellent start.

Details are still to come, but really just the Schultz has chosen the Oilers is enough. Shultz will sign for the maximum salary allowed from his draft year, plus bonuses but that’s about it because this is still an entry level deal. This amounts to a 2-year deal of $925,000 per year, and a signing bonus of $92,500. This give a total for bonuses of $2.85 million and an overall cap hit of $3.775 as per Mark Spector.

Welcome to Edmonton Justin Schultz, now the Oilers can concentrate on re-signing Ryan Smyth.

I hadn’t even thought about the draft aspect.  Taking ANOTHER forward instead of the D the desperately needed.  Lucky for them.

What I like about this signing is that the oil are only on the hook for 2 years to see if he can make the leap to the NHL ,If he is ,they can sign him long term ,if not they can trade the free asset for some thing and by then all the prime defencemen in the sytem will be ready to step in ...Great job Steve T
