There is no denying the love the city of Edmonton has for Ryan Smyth, and now there is a song expressing this love. Nielson at the Team 1260 has posted “We Built This Smitty” a re-working of We Built This City by Starship. In the words of Nielson “We figured that Ryan Smyth probably deserved his own song. So we give to you. “We Built This Smitty” “
You will have to listen to the song on the Team 1260’s webpage for now, but it’s worth the few minutes of your time.
We built this Smitty, we built this Smitty on greasy goals
We built this Smitty, we built this Smitty on greasy goalsEverybody knows him best mullet in the league
You probably know that he never gets fatigued
Face first in the corner, scoring every night
So many young kids Smitty’s in the spotlightHe may not be the captain but Smitty sure plays a role
So just remember we built this Smitty, we built this Smitty on greasy goalsWe built this Smitty, we built this Smitty on greasy goals
We built this Smitty, we built this Smitty on greasy goalsSmitty’s always playing in the biggest games
But he’ll never make it to the Hall of Fame
He may use his elbows or just use his fists
It’s why we gave him a spot on our beauty listHe may not be the captain but Smitty sure plays a role
So just remember we built this Smitty, we built this Smitty on greasy goalsWe built this Smitty, built this Smitty, we built this Smitty on greasy goals
We built this Smitty, built this Smitty, we built this Smitty on greasy goals
This is not the first hockey parody song, but it could be bigger than this summer’s sleeper hit “Welcome Back Winnipeg Jets” song written and performed by Robb Nash.
Songs about hockey, or hockey players are nothing new, but they never ceise to excite fans. The Edmonton Journal recently ran a “Puck Anthem” contest, calling for local bands to write an Oilers related song. The winners were Tupelo Honey with their song “Can’t Stop.”
After winning the Journal’s contest, the band had a portion of their song played Monday night in Rexall Place during the first period. Being Oilers’ fans, that was quite the honour. The best part may have been that Jordan Eberle scored the team’s only goal 14 seconds after the song was played.
It is always the right time for music, and perhaps when the team is struggling to find consistency most of all.

About Oil Patch
Lisa McRitchie is a fairly new writer, online at least, but makes up for inexperience with passion for the game of hockey and memories of Mrs. Leskiw’s English AP class; who knew they would pay off one day.
Oil Patch focuses on the Edmonton Oilers, the Edmonton Oil Kings, The Oklahoma City Barons and Team Canada Hockey with game coverage, news updates, speculation and interviews.
Although the Oilers have had a difficult past decade… or three, here at Oil Patch, the future looks bright.
