The Edmonton Oilers have been dropping like flies to injury for years. We try to assess where the blame is, we try to figure out whether or not the medical staff are on their toes, but what if it's not a matter of misdiagnosis, what if it's more a case of the players eating too many pasta dinners? No, seriously.
The list of professional sporting teams who are ditching high carb, low fat diets for low carb high fat (LCHF or paleo) diets is growing around the world as the global trend picks up. Teams are reporting fewer injuries, improved overall health and better fitness results.
The Australian Cricket team went LCHF after team doctor Dr. Peter Brunker had personal success making the move. The players saw his results and the changes in his life and wanted to give it a try. The results, less injury, weight loss and an overall improvement in health. The team was featured in a new documentary "Cereal Killers" by Dolan O'Neil, a one time medal winning high jumper for Ireland, son and nephew of players for the Irish Gaelic football team, looking for answers to why his father and uncle suffered a heart attack and adult onset diabetes after living their lives as premiere athletes.
Dr. Brunker recently gave a talk on the changes, the benefits and what comes next:
So how does this help the Oilers? How does it hurt? Why not? The team has been seeing strings of knee, hip, groin, shoulder, and soft tissue injuries. The team talks about their favourite pasta meals, why not look at making a change or running a trial experiment.
Some people have taken to talking about having the ghosts of past Oilers and all of the losses driven out of the arena, but this might be easier.

About Oil Patch
Lisa McRitchie is a fairly new writer, online at least, but makes up for inexperience with passion for the game of hockey and memories of Mrs. Leskiw’s English AP class; who knew they would pay off one day.
Oil Patch focuses on the Edmonton Oilers, the Edmonton Oil Kings, The Oklahoma City Barons and Team Canada Hockey with game coverage, news updates, speculation and interviews.
Although the Oilers have had a difficult past decade… or three, here at Oil Patch, the future looks bright.
