Oilers Break it off with the Barons

The Oklahoma City Barons, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers, announced Thursday it will cease operations at the end of the 2014-15 season.
The decision comes after the Barons were unable to complete a new affiliation agreement with the Oilers. The Barons have been the Oilers’ AHL affiliate since the 2010-11 AHL season.

It’s unfortunate for the hockey fans in OKC that it has to end this way. While unlikely, I hope the organization can find a way to continue to operate. The decision to shut down sounds rather hasty.

Alan, the AHL is planning to move a bunch of teams west, so this is probably the first of many of this type of news.

OKC supported the shit out of the old Blazers hockey team of the CHL, regularly leading league attendance with ~9k per game. After they lost the Blazers and picked up an AHL team I thought it would take off, but they never seemed to grab ahold of the city like the Blazers did.

Oilers don’t need an AHL team. That’s what the big club is for.
