The announcement that Edmonton Oilers’ winger Lennart Petrell would receive no further suspension following his hit Thursday night on Wild defenceman Marek Zidlicki was not made as a breaking news comment on TSN, ESPN or any other sports channel. It was instead a simple tweet from NHL Senior VP Player Safety Brendan Shanahan. Sportsnet’s Mark Spector pointed out how quickly and easily the news was then shared. In a matter of 15 minutes, everyone seemed to be aware of the decision. Where were we before twitter?
Petrell/Zidlicky: viewed extensively. Although Petrel’s hand is on Zidlicky’s back, we do not see a shove prior to the toe pick. No S.D.

From Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal
To Shanahan’s eye, he saw a hand in the back of Zidlicky, almost as a warning from Petrell to the defender that he was there. So, there’s no further disciplinary action, which means Petrell will be available to play against the Canucks in Vancouver on Boxing Day.
“I didn’t feel there was much contact,” said Petrell, who was given a major and a game misconduct for the check. “I didn’t think there was a big push or anything. I didn’t expect that he would fall.”
Merry Christmas Petrell Tom Renney. There are still 2 games remaining in Andy Sutton’s 8 game suspension.

You have a better eye than me, I honestly wasn’t sure which way this would go, even with the gif Thursday night. I’m glad that there was no suspension in the end

Thats a great catch by Shanahan and his team. On first viewing I thought it looked like 5 games minimum, the .gif file above though shows it was just a really unlucky play.
