On the eve of yet another Oilers' shutout loss, and only one day removed from the Oilers allowing the worst goal of the day (Thursday), let's have a look at the other oil in town and Edmonton Oilers' draft pick Mitch Moroz. We'll talk about Devan Dubnyk and the net situation tomorrow.
After being moved to the top line this year, Moroz set his sights on a 30 goal season, nearly double any totals he has had to this point. Funny thing is, that number of 30 could be low by the end of the season.
Thursday night, just 32 games into his season, Moroz is a point a game player with 20 goals and 12 assists.
Was goal number 20 all that memorable?
"I don't usually score a lot from up there," Moroz reflected "But the last couple of games I've been finding that soft spot and I just get to that mark, but I've got to double it after Christmas [laughs] but yeah that's nice."
You read that right, Moroz is thinking about going for 40 goals. "Might as well, I mean just continue to do those things that make me successful and when you are playing with top guys like it's easy. I have a lot of chem [chemistry] with Hank [Henrik Samuelsson] right now so it's been fun."
It might be playing on the top line, it might be the teammates, or it might even be the Movember mustache that might be here to stay "Might as well, I kind of have a beard to kind of mask it right now, it might stay."
Moroz will have ample minutes to shine over the coming weeks, as linemates Samuelsson will be with Team USA and Curtis Lazar will be with Team Canada for the 2014 World Juniors.
No matter how successful the Oilers prospects are, it never truly removes the sting of the Oilers season, but at the very least it is something else to focus on, and given time, Moroz could be a key piece of the Oilers' future success.
