Hall’s Injury Indicates Holes in Oilers’ Roster

Taylor Hall is out. Again. But of course, early in the season. This injury is not a statement about Taylor Hall’s health, athleticism or work ethic; this is about the Edmonton Oiler’s ability to fill in their roster.

Year after year, Oilers’ fans watched Ales Hemsky suffer injuries because he was one of few players going into puck battles; putting his body at risk to protect or acquire the puck. Now, fans watch a very similar situation for Taylor Hall, and not much has changed.

This is not a statement about Taylor Hall so much as it is a statement about the Edmonton Oilers’ ability to acquire players with size, players to keep up with Hall and while the easy answer is to say that the team needs someone to protect and defend the high end skill players the reality is that the team needs someone who can deflect some of the physical pressure and add scoring and offensive talent. Yes, the Oilers still need that elusive power forward.

The Edmonton Oilers did add to their roster, they did make improvements in goal, they did make moves that made the team slightly better, at least at this point. But at the end of the day, the team is still small for a team in the West, they still need to be tougher to play against. This is evidenced by the fact that the team is only two points ahead of where they were at this point last year.

Hall is not out for the season, only a few weeks. This was the best news possible for the Oilers, especially given that captain Andrew Ference will be out 3 games with his suspension for his illegal check to the head on Vancouver Canucks’ Zack Kassian. This means that games against the Philadelphia Flyers, Boston Bruins and Buffalo Sabres will showcase a less experienced Oilers team.
