Oil Kings beat Wheat Kings 2-1
After sweeping the Kootenay Ice in the first round of the WHL playoffs, the Oil Kings had a relaxing 8 days to prepare for their next opponents, the Brandon Wheat Kings. Going into game one the biggest question was of course, would the time off hurt or help the team’s momentum. After one game, it doesn’t appear to have hurt the team in the slightest. Speaking with the players, they seemed grateful for the break and considering how hard they worked to finish first overall in their conference it seems to make good sense.

StarPhoenix Says “Saskatoon not a great sports town”

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan has recently put in a bid to acquire an 8th NHL team in Canada. While some immediately brush the idea off, there are many who believe that this could work. None seem to be following this topic as closely as the StarPhoenix. The reason for that is clear once you realize that the StarPhoenix is not an Arizona product, but rather a Saskatoon paper.
Thursday morning, Les MacPherson has penned an article indicating that an NHL club may struggle to fill the local barn:
In a city that aspires to the National Hockey League, I would have expected more than 4,825 patrons the other night at a Saskatoon Blades playoff game.
This is only the best junior hockey in the world. If the Blades can’t draw 5,000 to a playoff game, how is the NHL going to draw 15,000 for 40 nights a year with ticket prices four or five times as high?
I just don’t see it happening, at least not anytime soon.

Dumba Watch 2012 Winds Down

With only three games remaining in the Red Deer Rebels’ schedule, the window of opportunity for scouts and fans alike to catch a glimpse of a truly special player before the 2012 NHL entry draft is closing. What you will see if you have the opportunity to watch Mat Dumba play is a gifted puck moving defenceman who is playing big minutes on a team that will hobble across the finish line. Dumba will make the big hits, block the hard shots and make a few of his own. For Dumba the Rebel’s regular season ending is just the first step in what will be a busy and life changing off season.

Red Deer Rebels fall 5-3 to Calgary Hitmen
After watching the Edmonton Oilers suffer through injury riddle season after injury riddled season, it’s easy to see similarities and have sympathy for the Red Deer Rebels of the WHL. The team has been playing with their depleted roster for months now. Some games they were only short a couple of players, but other games they were down to 12 forwards and 4 defencemen. The worst part of the situation for the Rebels, who can they call up? The team does have affiliated players, but the teams they are currently playing for have the right to choose whether or not to release the players. It the affiliated player is required for games, the Rebels go without.

Oil Kings Clinch WHL Eastern Conference Title

Oil Kings beat Rebels 5-2
A game that features two top ten prospects going into this year’s NHL entry draft is enough to garner attention. A Friday night WHL game featuring two top ten prospects in Red Deer is enough to attract a circus. As the scouts poured into the building, some wearing the logos of their teams, others merely with their clipboards and pens the importance of these final games became even more apparent. While the Oil Kings’ have five players that will likely be drafted this summer, it is Griffin Reinhart who has stolen the spotlight. For the Rebels, the feature player is of course Mat Dumba.

Fall Apart for Reinhart

There has been “fall for Hall,” “arson for Larsson,” “hoping for Hoppy” and there has even been talk of “fail for Nail” around Edmonton, but it is unlikely that the Oilers will have their third consecutive first overall pick. So, how about “fall apart for Reinhart?”

Triumphant Return: Travis Ewanyk Rejoins Oil Kings Lineup

The Edmonton Oilers have been using their WHL affiliate team, “the other oil in town” the Edmonton Oil Kings unlike any other team in the NHL and the Oil Kings keep winning. Recently, the Oil Kings have been selecting in the expansion draft players that the Edmonton Oilers have drafted, players such as Kristians Pelss and Martin Gernat. And now, the Oilers have been drafting from within the Oil Kings roster as well.

Drew Czerwonka: Healthy and Scoring

From the moment we first met, I knew that we would get along. It’s not as though I’m a difficult person, but the Oilers have been doing an exceptional job of drafting all around good hockey players and people. Drew Czerwonka, captain of the WHL Kootenay Ice is certainly one of them.

2012 Draft Prospect Griffin Reinhart Mid-Season
by Lisa McRitchie on 02/13/12 at 04:00 AM ET

Griffin Reinhart and the Edmonton Oil Kings have been having an amazing season. The Oil Kings are leading the Eastern Division of the WHL and Reinhart is second in points for defencemen on the team. Leading the team is Oilers’ prospect Martin Gernat but the two are separated by only 4 goals, but 13 points.
Reinhart has 12 goals, 16 assists, 23 penalty minutes and is a +15 all with a quarter of a season left to play. These numbers make Reinhart and attractive prospect going into the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.
