Following the Taylor Hall injury update, news that Ben Eager has some injury woes and Anton Lander took a maintenance day, the Edmonton Oilers have recalled centreman Ryan O’Marra from the Oklahoma City Barons. First round pick O’Marra was acquired by the Oilers as part of the package in the trade of Ryan Smyth to the New York Islanders on NHL trade deadline day 2007. During his time with the Oilers, O’Marra has played 24 NHL games, 24 ECHL games and 240 AHL games.
Oilers lose 2-1 to Predators
Monday night was Jordan Eberle mini-stick night in Rexall Place. The first 10,000 fans in attendance were given this collectable and much like Ryan Smyth bobblehead night, Eberle would be one of the most effective players on the team. Unfortunately, Eberle’s lone goal in the first period was not enough to earn an Oilers win.
“If I held my breath every time that Taylor Hall went flying into the net, I’d have brain problems… Maybe I do anyway but he’s relentless and he’s a reckless type of player and those are hard people to defend. As long as he keeps missing those posts, I’m alright with that.” That was Edmonton Oilers’ head coach Tom Renney following the Oilers 9-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks November 19th. Unfortunately for Renney, I don’t think that he’s as fine with Hall’s “reckless” play today. Following a disappointing 5-2 Oilers loss to the Colorado Avalanche, Taylor Hall has undergone an MRI.
Oilers beat Blackhawks 9-2
The last time Rexall Place was filled with a “we want 10 chant” was January 29th, 2009 in a game against the Buffalo Sabres. The Sabres would go on to win 10-2 and Oiler fans would cheer for the visiting team. Prior to that game, there was another we want ten incident and it was the same season but against the Chicago Blackhawks. What is extremely interesting is at the final score on that December 16th was also 9-2, but that time the win was Chicago’s.
Oilers beat Canucks 3-2
The Edmonton Oilers are an interesting team this year. They can play seemingly boring hockey for a week straight, then have two games in a row that bring fans to their feet, even while sitting at home. Facing division rivals the Vancouver Canucks this game looked scary to most fans who hoped that it would at least be a manageable pain. It seems that it is these games in particular that bring surprises, and where the Oilers shine. Leading the game 3-0 until the midway point of the game, the Oilers are showing longer glimmers of what is to come.
The Edmonton Oilers have made a couple of moves this week; sending defenceman Jeff Petry to the Oklahoma Barons of the AHL and have recalled right winger Ryan Keller.
Petry is being sent to Oklahoma City to play more minutes, especially since the Barons are missing injured defenceman Taylor Fedun. Fedun broke his femur during a pre-season game in St. Paul Minnesota against the Wild.
Oilers beat Predators 3-1 in regulation
In the past, the Edmonton Oilers had trouble beating the Nashville Predators. Last year, the curse was broken; the team found wins, and it was even Linus Omark who scored a game winning goal. This is a whole new year, with all new issues. Several Oilers were looking for their first goals because Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had 4 of the Oilers 5 goals through the first 3 games, and the other goal belonged to Ryan Smyth. This game would be only slightly different, but Oilers fans couldn’t be happier.
The Edmonton Oilers face several challenges in the coming season. The team is still/already riddled with injuries, don’t appear to have complete confidence in their goaltending, and the defence is still quite young and is easily the most identifiable weakness of the roster. While the Oilers appear good up front, that will depend upon the sophomores avoiding the dreaded second year slumps.
Coach Tom Renney gets asked a million questions every day, but Monday’s questions seemed to be concerning many more topics than usual. Renney was asked about the condition of his players, his choices for cuts, his starting lineup, about the players who weren’t cut, the team trip to Jasper and everything else the people of Oil Country would like to know. The Edmonton Oilers have a portion of Renney’s interview available on their website and Jason Gregor of the Team 1260, has a much longer portion available in the 3rd hour of the October 3rd show.
Oilers Beat Coyotes 3-2
The Edmonton Oilers continue to impress their fans through the pre-season, despite the fact that these games still mean nothing in the grand scheme of things. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has continued his point streak and has scored his first goal at the NHL level(ish), and looks to have some real chemistry with sophomores’ Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle.
About Oil Patch
Lisa McRitchie is a fairly new writer, online at least, but makes up for inexperience with passion for the game of hockey and memories of Mrs. Leskiw’s English AP class; who knew they would pay off one day.
Oil Patch focuses on the Edmonton Oilers, the Edmonton Oil Kings, The Oklahoma City Barons and Team Canada Hockey with game coverage, news updates, speculation and interviews.
Although the Oilers have had a difficult past decade… or three, here at Oil Patch, the future looks bright.
