Oilers lose 5 - 3 to Canucks
While I was enjoying the 2012 IIHF World Juniors tournament in Calgary, the Edmonton Oilers were struggling with their first game of their World Juniors road trip. The first stop was Vancouver, another difficult divisional rival game that on paper the Oilers had lost before the game even began.
I try to take a trip to at least one other NHL arena every year, and eventually I get around to writing up my experience. I wanted to write about my experience at LA Live and the Staples Center this summer, but the Colin Fraser issues put a damper on things and I didn’t think that it would matter how much I said I enjoyed my game, there was just too many other issues at the time. So, hopefully enough time has passed that I can once again talk about the Kings or a Kings related story.
Oilers lose 3-2 to Wild in a shootout
The trouble for the Oilers lately has been shots and consistency. For this game, the Oilers were able to match their opponents in terms of shots but consistency continued to elude the team. The Oilers earned a 2-0 lead and not only let that slide, but also managed to lose in the shootout. Of course what makes it worse is that it was to a division rival.
There is no denying the love the city of Edmonton has for Ryan Smyth, and now there is a song expressing this love. Nielson at the Team 1260 has posted “We Built This Smitty” a re-working of We Built This City by Starship. In the words of Nielson “We figured that Ryan Smyth probably deserved his own song. So we give to you. “We Built This Smitty” “
Oilers beat Wild 4-2
This win was a very long time coming. The Oilers had not won their past 17 outings to St. Paul Minnesota; the last win was Jan 16th, 2007. Of course the Oilers have a similar losing streak in Dallas, and it is still fairly recently that the Oilers have broke a Nashville losing streak, but still this was truly a momentous day in the life of many an Oiler fan. Of course Tom Renney would be so calm following this game, saying “It’s just another win.”
Oilers beat Blackhawks 9-2
The last time Rexall Place was filled with a “we want 10 chant” was January 29th, 2009 in a game against the Buffalo Sabres. The Sabres would go on to win 10-2 and Oiler fans would cheer for the visiting team. Prior to that game, there was another we want ten incident and it was the same season but against the Chicago Blackhawks. What is extremely interesting is at the final score on that December 16th was also 9-2, but that time the win was Chicago’s.
This loss makes three in a row, and so, the “fail for nail” sentiment is becoming more and more prevalent in my twitter feed amongst Oiler fans. All I can say to that is of course let’s just breathe and take this one game at a time shall we? After all, the Oilers are still above .500 and that in itself is a welcomed change.
Oilers lose 6-3 to the Bruins
The excitement for this game seemed to surround the Taylor-Tyler comparison, and the fact that Tyler Seguin made himself unavailable to the media today only fuelled the fire. Unfortunately, not many Oilers fans could imagine a win coming out of this game. The last time the Oilers won in Boston was 15 years and 3 days ago. Yup, November 7th, 1996 was the last time the Oilers walked away from Boston Gardens with a win.
Oilers extend winning streak to 6 with 3-0 win over the Kings
The Edmonton Oilers began their six game road trip in Los Angeles against a team that featured several ex Oilers; Matt Greene, Jarret Stoll, Ethan Moreau, and most recent addition Dustin Penner. The Kings and their fans are of course unhappy with the Oilers due to Dustin Penner’s production with the team, that Ryan Smyth asked for a trade back to the Oilers, and that Colin Fraser has yet to play a game as a King. As the Oilers left Staples Centre, Kings’ fans were not any more pleased.
The Edmonton Oilers remain on top of the NW division and the Western Conference with their win over the St. Louis Blues. This was the last Oilers home game until November 17th due to the Canadian Finals Rodeo which will make use of Rexall Place for the next couple of weeks. The only thing that matters to Oiler fans right now is another notch in the win column making it now five in a row. At this time last season, Oiler fans were wondering if they would get five wins on the season; my how things have changed.
