WHL Awards 301 Scholarships

The CHLPA is still in it's infancy and the loudest cry is for a better scholarship program. To those involved with the CHLPA the amount of time a player has to choose to take the scholarship money is too short. In the WHL it is the September of the year after the player's final year of WHL eligibility. While I cannot say that I am for or against the idea of a players union for the CHL players, I can say that I want to know more. But, it is excellent news to hear that so many players are taking advantage of available scholarship money this year.

Western Hockey League Commissioner Ron Robison announced today that a total of 301 WHL graduate players have been awarded WHL Scholarships for the 2012-13 academic year.

The WHL Scholarship recipients are enrolled as full-time students in 68 different post-secondary institutions throughout North America.

This season 183 of the 301 WHL Scholarship recipients are furthering their education while playing elite hockey in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Association.  In Western Canada 125 of these student athletes are playing in the Canada West University Conference, including Mount Royal University which joined the Canada West Conference for the 2012-13 season, and have combined their WHL Scholarship with additional financial assistance from their University to receive Western Canada’s Premier Hockey Scholarship.

Oilers Flying

Oilers shutout Flyers 2-0
It was a rare visit by the Philadelphia Flyers Thursday night in Edmonton, so rare in fact that the last time the Flyers won in Rexall Place was March 19, 2001. It’s not as though the Flyers play in Edmonton every year, although that would be a good change, but rather the teams only face each other in Edmonton every two to three years. Still, this victory is sweet for the Oilers; they need all of the wins they can get if only for their own sense of pride.

Thankful for Wins

Oilers beat Wild 4-2
This win was a very long time coming. The Oilers had not won their past 17 outings to St. Paul Minnesota; the last win was Jan 16th, 2007. Of course the Oilers have a similar losing streak in Dallas, and it is still fairly recently that the Oilers have broke a Nashville losing streak, but still this was truly a momentous day in the life of many an Oiler fan. Of course Tom Renney would be so calm following this game, saying “It’s just another win.”

One is the Loneliest Number

Oilers lose 4-1 to Stars
Why the Oilers seem to have so many arenas, as of the last few years, where the team just cannot seem to find a win I can’t say. The last time the Oilers had a win in Dallas was Saturday December 5th, a 3-2 shootout win. The last regulation win was a 2-0 victory… December 8th, 2006. According to Mark Spector of Sportsnet “Oilers powerplay desperately needs a D-man who can shoot/run it. Another loss in Dallas runs record here to 5-26-2-2 lifetime.”

Eager Wants More Minutes, Renney Wants More Wins

“I don’t think they realize yet what it takes to win on a nightly basis… It starts in your own head. The minute that you man up and buy in and understand how much it hurts to be a winner, we have a shot. Right now, not good enough.” That’s head coach Tom Renney on Sunday night after his team’s third loss in a row, this one against the Chicago Blackhawks.

I’m not sure how much more I can do with limited minutes. I’m not sure why he (Renney) made the change against Detroit.” And that’s Oilers’ left winger Ben Eager, the man who was brought in to add toughness to a young Oiler lineup and yet has nine hits in thirteen games and no goals and only a single assist but he does have one fight.

About Oil Patch

Lisa McRitchie is a fairly new writer, online at least, but makes up for inexperience with passion for the game of hockey and memories of Mrs. Leskiw’s English AP class; who knew they would pay off one day.

Oil Patch focuses on the Edmonton Oilers, the Edmonton Oil Kings, The Oklahoma City Barons and Team Canada Hockey with game coverage, news updates, speculation and interviews.

Although the Oilers have had a difficult past decade… or three, here at Oil Patch, the future looks bright.
