Orange & Black Breakdown
The sellout crowd of 45,808 rose to its feet; and just like that, the most anticipated beer league hockey game to ever grace the streets of Philadelphia had come to an end.
Quite the setting for a hockey game..
Today was the first day I was able to take in the scene first hand at Citizen’s Bank Park in Philadelphia, and it did not disappoint. If it hasn’t hit you yet, it is official: The Winter Classic is back.
The view from Section 317, Row 1. Beautiful.

Philly vs Dallas: Round 1 tonight as the Flyers take on the Stars before the football teams match up on Saturday. Stars are a gritty team who have thrived off their strong play from their net-minders. They will be a tough out tonight, but the big news today is that Giroux may be back tonight. More to come after the jump…
Ben Holmstom centering Rinaldo and Harry Z. Let that sink in, because that’s one of your Flyers lines tonight.
Needless to say, the Flyers - remarkably 8-2-0 in their last 10 and first place in the Eastern conference - are taking the ice with yet another newcomer to the fold; and he’s skating in our top 9.
But that’s not all.
A rare battle with enemies from the northwest beckons – to the write up!
Once again, I’m still in Nashville tonight, and I’m going to check out the Predators take on the Red Wings so this write up will be a little abbreviated. After watching the highlights of the game, the amazing shift for Simmonds goal (youtube it now), and the 24/7 special it looks like the Flyers will be just fine without Giroux as EVERYONE has stepped up their game. More after the jump…
Ever since it’s poetic conclusion last season, hockey fans everywhere have been clamoring for another inside look at an NHL team through the 24/7 lens of HBO. Puckheads and casual viewers alike found themselves wanting more, a notion cemented with a Sports Emmy for outstanding edited sports series – the ‘Stanley Cup’ of awards the show would ultimately go on to achieve. Those prayers were answered early this fall, and the plans were put in place.
Now, after months of waiting, the show begins its second season tonight from deep within the hearts of two of the most iconic franchises in the league. So what should we expect?
Little late on the write up today. I’m a little off because I’m working out of Nashville this week. The one hour difference is messing with me. Regardless, Flyers face off against the Capitals who have yet to get it going since firing Boudreau. After the jump, we get into the details…
…Now that we’ve got your attention, it’s time to prepare yourself as one of the fiercest rivalries in the NHL begins a new chapter with the Atlantic division lead on the line. To help fuel the flames for this playoff-esque matchup, Vince and I are here to give you a playoff-esque write-up after the jump.
This is your prototypical trap game for the Flyers. Even though they are playing tonight, the biggest game of the season is happening tomorrow. Even as fans, we get captivated by the next big game. Tonight’s game though starts a tough stretch of games for the Flyers ending with Chicago on the January 5th. It will show us whether they will be vying for a top spot come March or whether they will be battling for their playoff lives. After the jump, we take a look at the matchup between the Sabres and Flyers.
Thus far this week, we’ve talked about what was and we’ve covered what is; but when all is said and done, it all comes down to what can be. The Flyers have gone far too long without rewarding the diligence of their franchise and city with a Stanley Cup, but do they have what it takes to get it done this year? Are the pieces in place to reach the holy grail of hockey once and for all?
Let’s discuss it after the jump.
About Orange & Black Breakdown
The Orange & Black Breakdown looks to be the ultimate, around the clock source for news and information on the Philadelphia Flyers organization and it’s ever-present quest for the Stanley Cup. Focusing on what the team can do to achieve success is the ultimate goal.
The OBB is written and maintained by myself - Marc Siciliano. I’m a college graduate and media production professional in the sports industry with credits on projects like Hard Knocks: Bengals and 24/7 Penguins vs. Capitals: Road to the Winter Classic. A man of many hobbies, I always seem to find a way to spend a disproportionate amount of my daily routine with two things: Flyers hockey and social media (much to the dismay of my hockey impartial friends on twitter).
So what does this mean for you? The plan is to combine these
time-wasting habits passions with my love for writing to provide you with complete coverage of the Flyers from both my head and around the web, 24/7.
This is my second writing stint focusing on the Flyers, but for a much larger audience - so do be gentle. Different perspectives and opinions on the organization are welcome and encouraged. Just because I see it one way doesn’t mean I’m beyond seeing it your way as well, so speak up!
I’m always interested in interacting with readers, so find me on twitter (@marcs797) or email me (firstname.lastname@example.org) and let’s talk hockey.
Thanks for reading; Lets go Flyers!
