Childs Play

Last night the Jackets took Winnipeg by the ears in Nationwide and ran them to a 5-1 victory. Two Jets goals were waived off due to goal tending interference but it was still a clean game. The exact type of game you want to see your prospects play, staying out of the box. A nice slapper from the blue line and Nick Holden notched a goal. The next came Mayorov popping one in. Both players have had their chances to play for the Blue Jackets in the past but were sent back to the minors to cook some more. More so for Mayorov than Holden. The newbie on the ice, Boone Jenner, scored his first goal in a Jacket’s uniform. To even the ratio two goals by two jackets, Antoine Vermetter and Sammy Pahlsson came to end the scoring for Columbus and a win. Naturally the only Jet to score was the upcoming Evander Kane.

Further west the Jets did the same to the Jackets achieving 6-1. Unfortunately it was untelevised most everywhere so here’s the recap:

Associated Press
WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Mark Scheifele had two goals and a pair of assists and the Winnipeg Jets won their first NHL preseason game at home with a 6-1 victory Tuesday over the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Paul Postma also had a goal and three assists in the split-squad game before a jubilant crowd of 15,004 at MTS Centre. Columbus won the matchup in Ohio 5-1.
The Jets raised their sticks to the screaming crowd as they left the ice.
Scheifele was Winnipeg’s seventh overall pick in this year’s NHL draft.
Jets captain Andrew Ladd, Kevin Clark and Ivan Telegin also scored.
Columbus got its lone goal from Ryan Johansen.
Winnipeg defenseman Dustin Byfuglien and forward Nik Antropov had a pair of assists.
In Winnipeg, fans were chanting “Go Jets Go” before the players even stepped on the ice.
And when they did, they were greeted by a standing ovation and loud singing of the Canadian national anthem.
It was a long-awaited moment for the fans.
The Jets left Winnipeg after the 1995-96 season to become the Phoenix Coyotes, leaving fans to adopt the American Hockey League Manitoba Moose that fall.
When the announcement came last May that Moose owner True North Sports and Entertainment had purchased the Atlanta Thrashers and was moving them to the Manitoba capital, it sent the city into a frenzy of anticipation.
Even the game’s first fight 37 seconds into the first period got the fans roaring as Byfuglien went at it with Cody Bass.
Byfuglien, who’s facing four charges in Minnesota related to impaired boating, led all NHL defensemen in goals last season with 20 and added 33 assists.
Postma opened the game’s scoring at 7:49, getting the puck past Blue Jackets goalie Curtis Sanford, who stayed in for the full game.
Winnipeg started Ondrej Pavelec in net and switched to David Aebischer to start the third period.

Such an emotionally charged historical game deserved nothing but a win. Columbus seemed to help by keeping goal scorers Nash and Carter off the ice. I don’t blame them, the only way to really enjoy a hockey game is with a brew in one hand and the other formed into a fist or cupping your mouth to scream. Regardless this was a brutal game with four fights and countless penalties.  Columbus accrued 60 minutes in penalties and the Jets with more than half with 34 minutes. This would have been painful for a Jacket’s fan to watch, thank you for not airing it. There has always been a problem with palyers like Dorsett staying out of the box. I have to say though that nothing makes you feel more vindicated than Ryan Johansen dumping the only goal for Columbus in. We can’t forget the top players we have in the bullpen for us, even if they might seem like trade bait.

Watch tonight, 7 pm est, the Washington Capitals play the Blue Jackets at Nationwide. Tune in here.

It’s some jackets season recap or something. I’m DV-Ring it while I watch the game. You’d think they’d do the fans a favor. At least this broadcast is better than last night at your house. You can actually see the puck.

Now that the Jackets are starting to turn the roster issues in the right direction, its time for their marketing department to finally learn how to treat their fans.  A good first step would have been getting Fox Sports to air the preseason games.
