3 on 3 Or: You’re gonna need a bigger boat

These are my six takeaways from the latest Detroit Red Wings game.  I am committed to finding three positives and three “are you kidding me” moments.  In a season that has been difficult to watch there is an overwhelming amount of negativity amongst the Wings fans I know (at least through this site along with twitter) and love.  So instead of getting bummed out I am going to take it on myself to find the positive while also realizing that the “are you kidding me” moments are dominant.  I am extremely biased.  Things I will avoid 1. Management.  Like a coach I am working with the team they have given me.  By the way I probably will not manage to avoid the one thing I just said I would be avoiding.

I guess I pressed my luck a little too much after "complaining" the Wings dominate(ish) a game on only my second post.  I am not sure if a let down game was to be expected or if the three games in California were basically this season in a nutshell.  Two games where the losing team scores 0 goals and then a 9 goal outburst that we were on the wrong side of.  So lets talk about the Sharks from San Jose.

3 on 3 Or: How to topple a King

Last night was a fun hockey night.  The Kings of LA are the main topic but I have a bonus GOOD and BAD moments.  And since I can basically do whatever I want I am going to be a rebel and start with the bonus coverage.  I know what you're thinking, "Axe, man,  I don't care what you do".  So lets talk about the WJC.

Since this is my first time posting something like this I imagine it will be a work in progress.  I have committed to write more and what better topic than something I am passionate about.  Mostly I just want to get one of those cool banners like Malik has.  You are probably thinking, great another Red Wings blog.  I totally understand and if you please direct all comments here they will be taken under advisement.  So.. Anaheim eh?  The Mighty Ducks of the west.

It’s OK

Hello-  How are you?  I am fine.  No, really.  I am fine.  I. Have. No. Twitches. Based. On. Anything. Red. Wings. Related.  Background you ask?  Well I am a four time Stanley Cup Champion.  I have been to the playoffs 24 years in a row.  I have won six conference Championships and the Presidents Trophy six times as well.  What else?  16 Division Championships, Cool.  March 26th 1997.  Yea I was there, anything else you need to know about my background.  Well I am 35 and have been a Red Wings fan since 1990.  Was I a player or a coach or any part of the team during those years?  No.  The 19 people who are reading this understand.  To be a Red Wings fan is to be......No not to be.  It is life.  I remember the Dead Wings.  It wasn’t essential in my life at the time but I remember it.  My first real memories are watching Steve Yzerman play on Play (Comcast Play?) Network.  It was fuzzy.  Maybe it was CBC.  Rock 'em Sock 'em Hockey with Don Cherry.  However, my first real emotion was 1995.  The stupid lockout or strike or whatever.  It sucked.  I WANTED my Red Wings.  I was 14.  I got my wish and we destroyed the league.  Awesome.  And then we met the New Jersey Devils.  Wow.  4 games, really?  That was emotion to the 10th level.  I won’t go through anything past '95 because once again, the 19 know it.  When you fall in love with, well, anything at 14/15 it sticks with you for life.  No matter how much it breaks your heart.  Just ask the girl I was in love with at 15.  I still talk to her even though she is married with three kids.

The Red Wings and the Playoffs.

I'm an avid KK reader but rarely a writer.

I only really write anything when I'm fired up or angry about the Wings.

I am brutally honest and never sugarcoat anything.  I can say that I watch every single Wings game without fail.  I'm a stat and cap geek.  I've been ganged up on and called names before for voicing my opinion by so called bigger fans on the DRW than I am.

What Would You Do?

I know it’s early but I was looking through the Red Wings cap situation next season and I came accross some interesting decisions that Holland and Co. are going to have to make for the 2010-11 season.

Goaltending and Defence are pretty much set on Detroit.  Lidas, Raf, Kronner, Stu, Lilja, Rig, and Kindl.  If we can sign Janik to another minor-league deal, he’s good insurance.  If Liljs doesn’t end up coming back due to health reasons, there are other options out there (Ward, Boynton, etc.).

Up front though, we have some issues:

Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Franzen, Filppula, Cleary, Helm, Draper, and Eaves are all coming back (Helm and Eaves needing to be re-upped).  That’s 8.  Throw in Homer and that’s 9.

Abby has to make the team next year as does Ritola.  Assuming both stick, that’s 11.  Ritola can be the 13th forward, so not a big issue.  But, what do you do with Abby?
