Roloson for Khabibulin—Thoughts?

So I was watching the highlights from the Lightning-Leafs game last night (7-3 TOR) and trying to think of a decent shakeup for TB, especially in net after watching what happened.

What about Nikolai Khabibulin for Dwayne Roloson straight up (or maybe a pick going with Rollie given Khabby’s play this year)?  This would give Khabibulin the chance to return to a place where he has had success (‘04 Stanley Cup) and is comfortable and likewise with Roloson (‘06 Finals).  In addition, it would get Khabby’s (1 year remaining on his deal) $3.75M off next year’s books for Edmonton while giving Tampa the time to figure out a long-term solution.  The teams’ caps would barely be affected this year as Roloson’s cap hit on his one-year deal is $3.5M.

If Khabby can keep up his strong play upon his return to Tampa, it will give them a chance to turn things around a bit and possibly give them the shake up they need without having to rattle their core before they’re sure that’s necessary.  In addition, it would be good for PR bringing back the cup-winning goaltender (although I’m not sure how bitter people are about Khabby darting to the $$ in Chicago upon becoming a UFA).  This could give Tampa a good jolt without anything too drastic.

Does anyone else think this is feasible/a good way to shake things up in Tampa?

to think EDM would ship him to TB in a straight up trade is pretty naive.

I agree with Chet’s comments.  Tampa needs to give more back, especially when dealing from their position of weakness, needing to make playoff noise while Lecavier and St. Louis are still in their prime.  Edmonton’s fans are more accepting of a poor season, knowing that the development of their kids will bring success.  If you look at this from the Oiler GM’s point of view, there is little upside to making this trade.

I said TB may need to include a pick given Khabby’s recent play (maybe a 3rd), but it does get that money off of the books for next year for EDM, who has been spending near the cap without much to show for it.  In addition, there isn’t much to say that his play this year isn’t an aberration—especially considering how much worse his play has been the last month (3.20 GAA, .897 SPCT) versus his overall stats that Chet mentioned.

I like this trade.

I wouldn’t mind giving up a 1st round pick with Roli for Khabby.

never would happen unless tb offers a lot more.

i would do this in a heartbeat…. khabby still has one more year at 3.5mil while rolli contract runs out at the end of this year which means we get 3.5 mil in cap relief next year…. plus roli is a fan fav in edm

not a bad idea, but that would lock Tampa up to Khabibulin/Garon next year and I’m sure Yzerman wants to look at better options over the summer…

Roloson appears to be washed up. But Khabibulin for the rest of this year AND next year is not a winning strategy, in my estimation.

Khabibulin had a nice start to the year, but since the lockout he has been at or below league average most of the time. Roloson may be the oldest goalie in the league, but Khabby is the third-oldest, which puts him at risk for the kind of rapid drop-off in production that we’ve just now seen from Roloson. I think it’s fair to say he’s already in decline.

Khabibulin is not a good enough goalie to propel Tampa to a championship (or even at this stage, a playoff appearance), so I don’t see why Yzerman would commit to him over a season and a half—not to mention give up a draft pick (Tampa is a pretty old team overall, actually) in the process.

Better to wait and look for an off-season solution. It might end up being another stopgap, but it’d probably be a better stopgap than Khabibulin.

You’re drinking what Khabi is drinking. Won’t happen, lose-lose for both sides for the sake of a warm-and-fuzzy homecoming.

Won’t happen. Bolts get Rollie off the books after this season and aren’t going to add another aging goaltender. Certainly aren’t going to sweeten the offer for an uncertain Habby.

Thing is, while Oiler fans might settle for the 13th seed in the West, the Oilers management feel that i this team has a legitimate shot at the playoffs. And while Dubnyk is a pretty good goalie, considering his age and experience, he can’t handle the starting role on his own. Khabby is here to ease the pressure. The Oilers NEED Khabibulin this season. I really can’t see them trading him.

Yzerman’s going to make a real deal for a goalie after Roli goes off the UFA land.  He won’t go for another almost washed up golaie like Khabi.  I’d bet a billion dollars on it - ala Eddie the Eagle.

Can’t believe the disrespect these 2 guys are getting in these comments. I mean, if they’re past their prime, fine, but to talk about them like they’re yesterday’s trash, wow. How quickly we forget Khabi winning us a Stanley Cup and Roli getting us to within 1 goal of the finals. Talk about “What have you done for me lately?”.
