Earlier today, veteran forward Jay Pandolfo agreed to a one-year deal with the New York Islanders. Pandolfo will provide a veteran presence for a group of young, talented Islanders forwards. The Islanders also inked Ryan Strome to an entry-level contract just before the 5 PM deadline. Strome was the 5th overall pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

Nabby Makes Preseason Debut, Isles Place Five On Waivers

Last night, in a 2-0 loss to the Calgary Flames, Evgeni Nabokov played in his first game with the New York Islanders. Nabokov played 40 minutes and overall looked steady. It is expected that Nabokov will be rusty at least in the short-term due to being out of the NHL all of last season. Nabokov has never really been known for handling the puck, but that was one glaring area of weakness last night. There were a number of times when Nabokov misplayed the puck that almost resulted in Flames goals. On a positive note, Nabokov stopped 15 of 16 shots and looked pretty solid in net.

Mark Streit Is Back
by William Morrison on 09/26/11 at 09:13 PM ET

Mark Streit hadn’t played a game in 17 months, but if Saturday was any indication, Streit hasn’t missed a beat. While playing 24 minutes in a 6-2 Islanders preseason win over the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night at Nassau Coliseum, Streit scored one goal and notched two assists. The Islanders missed Streit quarterbacking the power play last season. With Streit manning the point, the Islanders were three for six on the power play. Streit looked like he is in great shape and skated well. Playing 24 minutes this early in the preseason is a good indication of things to come this season. Streit showed no ill effects coming off of two shoulder surgeries in the offseason.
