More On The Mark Streit Captaincy And A New Arena Proposal

Earlier today, Mark Streit was named the first Swiss born captain in NHL history.  A lot of people thought that the captaincy would go to John Tavares, but I think that Streit is a great pick and he is the right pick.  Tavares will get his time to wear the ‘C’ at some point in the future.  Right now, at this point in Tavares’ development, he should be given the time to learn from veterans, put points on the board, and further develop his game.  Tavares has great leadership qualities and will be with the Isles for a long time, but he can lead without wearing the ‘C’.

I am somewhat surprised that the team didn’t announce the alternate captains today as well.  As discussed in previous posts, I think the right choices to wear the ‘A’ are Kyle Okposo and Frans Nielsen.  The Isles have many viable candidates to wear the ‘A’.  It would come as no surprise if Tavares is given an ‘A’, especially only a few days after signing a long-term contract extension with the team.

This is an exciting time for Islanders fans.  Within a one week time period, Tavares signed a long-term contract extension, Streit was named the 13th captain in franchise history, and the Isles will play their first preseason game on Friday night against the Stanley Cup Champion Boston Bruins.

In other Isles news today, as reported in Newsday here, Nassau community leaders and developers outlined a nearly $347 million dollar plan for the area surrounding Nassau Coliseum.  The area outlined in the proposal covers 77 acres.  According to Newsday, the proposal includes a minor-league baseball park, an outdoor ice rink that is presumably for public use, a parking garage, and retail and restaurant space.  The proposal also includes substantial upgrades to Nassau Coliseum that would make it a state of the art facility.  While this is nothing more than a proposal at this point, it is certainly good news that there is still substantial interest in upgrading Nassau Coliseum and developing the area around it.
