Greetings from the press box at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, where the Sabres and Flyers are getting ready for Game 2 at 5:00 EST.
Much of the talk here in Philly today about the Flyers game plan, as you’d expect, is revolving around how to solve Ryan Miller. You’re going to see Philly’s forwards make more of an effort to get in Miller’s face in this game. The Sabres star netminder will be dealing with a lot of screens and, more than likely, some not so incidental contact in his goal crease.
This certainly wouldn’t be the first time that opponents have resorted to physical tactics with Miller, and it will be interesting to see how Buffalo’s defense responds.
That defense may include Dennis Persson, who the Sabres just called up on an emergency recall basis due to the fact that Shaone Morrisonn is injured and unable to play today. We likely won’t know until warmups whether the untested Persson or Andrej Sekera, trying to come back from an injury of his own, will play in the game.
The Sabres can give themselves a much greater chance of going up 2-0 in the series if they can somehow find a way to get some scoring chances from the dirty areas near the Philly net. All of the question marks surrounding Sergei Bobrovsky aren’t going to be too relevant if Buffalo doesn’t test him enough, which was definitely the case in Game 1.
It’s great that youngsters Tyler Myers, Chris Butler, Marc-Andre Gragnani and Mike Weber held down the fort on the blue line for the Sabres in Game 1, but just imagine how valuable a comeback game for veteran physical d-man Steve Montador would be for this team, especially with another rookie possibly being forced into the lineup today.
There is some talk that the Flyers are considering inserting Nik Zherdev into the lineup and putting him on the Mike Richards-Kris Versteeg line, but nothing is confirmed.
Update 5:02pm: Sekera in for Buffalo, Zherdev scratched again for Philly
