Red Wings will have to wait until Tuesday, at the very least, for Ryan Suter’s decision

As noted earlier this evening, the Zach Parise sweepstakes may take until Tuesday to decide, and as I wake up from a much-needed nap, RedWingsFeed offers this from the Ryan Suter camp, via ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun:

From Suter’s agent Neil Sheehy: ``There will be no decision on Ryan Suter tonight and there is no timetable for his contract ...’ con’t
...
`... signing at this time. Ryan is considering his opportunities and is taking the necessary time to give each proper consideration. ‘’

The Tennessean’s Josh Cooper received the same statement:

The Ryan Suter sweepstakes will likely go another day. According to his agent, Neil Sheehy, the free agent defenseman will not make a choice on where to sign Monday.

“There will be no decision tonight out of Ryan and there’s no timetable for his contract signing at this time,” Sheehy said. “He’s considering his opportunities and taking the necessary time and giving each one proper consideration.”

When asked about the Predators and whether Suter had ruled them out, Sheehy characterized them as “in the mix.”

The Canadian Press is confirming the whole schlamiel, too:

Zach Parise needed more than 24 hours to choose which hockey team to make happy.

“I’m getting closer but haven’t made a decision,” Parise told reporters Monday in Mississauga, Ontario , according to the Canadian Press. “I haven’t set any deadlines.”

New Jersey is hoping to keep Parise, who became a free agent Sunday when he didn’t re-sign with the Devils. Pittsburgh, Detroit, Minnesota and Nashville are among the teams trying to lure him away from the only team he has played for in his NHL career.

The 27-year-old forward and 27-year-old defenceman Ryan Suter were the top players to hit the market. Suter, who also has played for only one team, the Nashville Predators, wanted more than a day to pick a place to play as well.

“There will be no decision on Ryan Suter tonight and there is no timetable for his contract signing at this time,” Suter’s agent, Neil Sheehy, wrote in an email Monday night. “Ryan is considering his opportunities and is taking the necessary time to give each proper consideration.”

TSN posted a 2:42 video of Darren Dreger breaking down the teams that might be in the mix, and even he doesn’t know which teams are the frontrunners, though he mentions the Wild, the Penguins, the Red Wings, the Blackhawks, and of course the players returning to their respective employers…

Update: And here’s more on Parise from ESPN’s Katie Strang:

And just when you thought the wait was over. Coveted unrestricted free agent Zach Parise announced he has yet to make a decision on where he will sign.

“I’m getting closer but haven’t made a decision. I haven’t set any deadlines,” he told reporters in an impromptu press conference early Monday evening.

The 27-year-old winger said he plans consult with his family before making a final call. He also insisted he is not being pressured by any of the teams with offers on the table to hasten the process.

According to Parise’s agent, Wade Arnott, he narrowed his list to a “small, select group,” on Sunday when the free agency period begin.

“We have thoroughly deliberated every option with Zach,” Arnott told ESPN the Magazine’s Craig Custance in an email. “He wishes to take some time to step back and review all with his fiancee and his family. We could be drawing closer to a decision.”

Although he did not say what teams remain in contention, Parise confirmed the Devils are still in the mix.

Update #1.5: And then the former agent gets into the mix. From Sportsnet’s Brian Lawton:

Early word is nothing expected on Suter or Parise until Tuesday earliest! Long weekend just got a lot longer for some! Bonus ask-12 million
...
Early word on Suter/Parise waiting to Tuesday. Expect decisions on both by 1:00 tomorrow latest! #letvacationstart Suter is leaning towards

And then it all went to hell:

@sportsnetbroph No seriously by 1:00pm or all the offers are off the table…... The media can’t take it anymore!

[sarcasm] Ha ha ha. [/sarcasm] There are a couple dozen free agents and a couple dozen teams whose futures will pivot upon Suter and Parise’s decision, and millions of fans’ hearts are still in their throats. This needs to get over and done with sooner than later.

If we ever manage to sign one of these children, it’s going to take a while to forget this behavior. My interest is waning.

I felt strongly that Suter would come to Detroit, but based on the fact that both Parise and Suter are dragging this out, makes me think they’re going to the same place. Unfortunately, I get the feeling Parise will be with the Pens, here is to hoping Suter has a mind of his own.

Bluto: What? Over? Did you say “over”? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!
Otter: [to Boon] Germans?
Boon: Forget it, he’s rolling.
Bluto: And it ain’t over now. ‘Cause when the goin’ gets tough…
[thinks hard of something to say]
Bluto: The tough get goin’! Who’s with me? Let’s go!

It seem obvious that he doesn’t.

Suter hasn’t exactly been forthcoming as to why this is dragging on so long, but I understand Parise’s reasoning.

But none of that even really matters, does it? They’ve been handed an arm full of nice contracts from various teams around the league.

The Wings fan in me is disappointed that this is continuing to drag on, but the other part of me understands that some of these contracts could be for a very long time and a very nice sum of money. Both players, understandably so, need to consider their options and make up their mind as to where they want to go.

This is likely a 8-10 year commitment from all of the “rumors”, not a 3 year contract like Tootoo. As much as everyone wants this to be over, this contract will pretty much decide about 1/7 of each of their lives. I don’t blame them for taking their time and asking their loved ones (if I remember correctly, Parise is engaged) because the money probably isn’t the deal maker, it’s what team and city are you going to commit a BIG chunk of your life/2nd half of your career. I want it over, too, but I don’t blame either one of them. Nobody else in free agency (and only the elite like Crosby) are going to lock themselves in for this long of a term. Now, George, get some rest, please.

Pardon me for the grammar above. One other thought. What would be nice is one of those “alarms” that could go off on the computer when the announcement of either is made, so we don’t have to be looking this up all of the time (but I’m sure Paul doesn’t mind the extra internet traffic). George, you got any of those alarm thingofabobbers handy?

dragging it on? it has been barely a day since they each got a dozen offers for millions of dollars. it takes time to review each, consider each city. it’s an enormous decision for someone their age. it’ll uprooted their entire life and have a major impact on their future and their families’ future.

Sign Carle. Sign Semin. Then let Suter sign tomorrow. Then worry about cap numbers.

Hearing rumors that a 3-way trade between BUF, CBJ and ANA is brewing, involving Nash and Ryan…

Can’t wait for them both to flip Detroit the finger well after every other free agent has signed elsewhere.  Fuch ‘em both and go grab Semin, Carle and Ryan.  Maybe they would be enthusiastic to play here.

Let’s not blame the players. Their agents drag the proceedings on, looking for a last second rise in year or salary. Just the way it goes. Since no one else has been grabbed (Carle, Semin, etc) by another of these teams, it’s done no harm.

Just sucks to wait…

How do you know he hasn’t made up his mind and is trying to convince Parise to go with him?

I’d take Ryan over Parise any day.  Or both.  And of course Lidstrom retirement was a big inside joke to fool everyone.  And Stevie Y somehow sheds 20 years and comes back in his prime to play with the Ryan/Yzerman/Parise line.

On a serious note, the Wings have done more than most.  A few people have gotten some of the prizes, but other than Tootoo I think the signings have all been great depth moves.  If they don’t land a big fish, there’s gotta be a fairly large trade coming up.

Yes guys, cmon, $90 Million dollars and considering where they and their kids will grow up and so much zhit to consider.  Probably had not even gotten through all the offers in detail before this morning.  I would expect a round of talks at least one more time with 3 or 4 finalists, followed up with more out of courtesy as clubs alter their proposals.  I took a lot longer than this to consider accepting an ROTC scholarship which was worth a whole lot less money and only 4 years of my life, which turned into 20.
