Red Wings lose Conner’s services, recall Tatar

Updated 3x at 11:52 AM: Oh, swell. According to MLive’s Ansar Khan (Update: and DetroitRedWings.com’s Bill Roose), the Red Wings’ most promising performer of late has suffered a broken hand, and he’s not the only banged-up Wing going into tonight’s game against Nashville (8 PM EST, FSD/FST/WXYT):

Detroit Red Wings forward Chris Conner is expected to be out for two weeks with a hand injury, general manager Ken Holland said today. Holland said Conner has a slight fracture, sustained in Tuesday’s 4-1 win at Pittsburgh. He will be placed on short-term injured reserve.

The Red Wings recalled forward Tomas Tatar from the Grand Rapids Griffins for precautionary reasons. Holland said another player, whom he would not identify, has a minor injury and might not be able to play tonight at Nashville (8 p.m., Fox Sports Net Detroit).

If that player can’t play, Tatar will be in the lineup. If that player can play, Tatar will rejoin the Griffins in Cleveland.

“We got a player (other than Conner) that just got hurt the other day,’’ Holland said. “We think he can play (tonight). If he can’t play, we got to have a player here (as insurance). That player felt better yesterday, we’ll see how he feels at the skate (today).’‘

Update: Per the Free Press’s Helene St. James, via Twitter:

Emmerton in for Conner tonight, turns out he suffered a small hand fracture Tuesday, though he finished the game
...
Holland says another forward “is a little banged up” Wouldn’t disclose who, but said it’s not Pavel Datsyuk

Update #2: Here’s Helene St. James’ article about Conner’s injury:

The Red Wings recalled forward Tomas Tatar from Grand Rapids this morning after discovering Chris Conner has a broken hand, and to offset a possible injury to an undisclosed player. General manager Ken Holland said another forward “is a little banged up,” but wouldn’t reveal who, other than to confirm it’s not Pavel Datsyuk. Everyone who played Tuesday at Pittsburgh finished the game. The Wings didn’t practice Wednesday, opting to take a day off at home due to December’s heavy travel schedule.

Rookie Cory Emmerton will take Conner’s place in the lineup tonight when the Wings take a three-game winning streak up against the Predators at Bridgestone Arena.

“We’ve put Conner on seven-day injury reserve,” Holland said. “He went to see a hand specialist yesterday, and he’s out two weeks with a little fracture. He’s going to stay with us and skate to keep up his conditioning. We’ve brought Tatar in as an emergency precaution. If the player who is banged up can play, we’ll send Tatar back down.”

Holland also said Jan Mursak, who is recovering from a broken ankle, will be sent to Grand Rapids for a conditioning stint right after Christmas.

Update #3: Here’s the Macomb Daily’s Chuck Pleiness’s report and conversation with Holland:

Chris Conner’s three-game point streak will have to put on hold. Conner was placed on short-term injured reserve after suffering a slight hand fracture in Tuesday’s 4-1 win at Pittsburgh according to general manager Ken Holland. Conner is expected to miss two weeks.

Holland also said another player is also suffering with a minor injury and might not be able to play tonight at Nashville. Holland would not say what other player is injured. Because of that the Wings recalled forward Tomas Tatar from the Grand Rapids for precautionary reasons. If that other inured player can play Tatar will rejoin the Griffins in Cleveland.

“We’ve got a player other than Conner that got hurt the other day,” Holland said. “We think he’ll play, but if he can’t we’ve got Tatar here as insurance.”

Cory Emmerton, who Conner has leapfrogged to become a regular in the lineup, will play tonight against the Predators. Conner has a goal and two assists in his last three games playing on a line with Danny Cleary and Darren Helm.

Wow, this season is turning into an injury bloodbath for everyone.  It’s looking like teams with the most depth are going to be the ones to watch.

Jeebus, Rifleman’s out with a fractured hand?  Knew the going was gettin’ too good.

And that mysterious “banged up” player?  Since Tatar, a forward, was called up, it most probably means a Wings defenseman is NOT injured.  Whew…  That’s enough of that.

Cleary-Helm-Mursak/Eaves/Conner/Tatar.  At least the wings have a seemingly endless supply interchangable small speedy forwards
