Awesome news from the London Free Press’s Morris DallaCosta:
Shawn Burr finally got some good news in his battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
They have found a match for a bone marrow transplant, a transplant the former NHLer and Sarnia native will be having May 23.
“He’s not feeling the best right now,” said David Goetze who runs the Shawn Burr Foundation dedicated to raising money for research into blood disorders. “But he’s in remission so he’s a good candidate for transplant. Through the bone marrow registry there was a woman that was found to be a matching candidate found in Toronto.”
Burr, 45, was diagnosed with AML in February 2011. He has been undergoing treatment since. One of his last public appearances was in Detroit during the Red Wings playoff game. He also held a donor match registry day as part of Great Lakes Sports City Arena in Fraser, between the Red Wings alumni and Burr’s all-star team in March.
Burr was declared cancer free last year after battling the disease with chemotherapy but the disease returned and Burr needed a bone marrow transplant in his continuing fight against cancer. Now he has a match.
“Even though he’s not feeling well, Shawn is in great spirits,” Goetze said. “When he found out that it was a woman who matched his blood, he said that when he plays golf now, he’ll ‘have to hit from the women’s tees.’ He had a few other things to say in typical Shawn fashion but it’s great news for Shawn.”
