Kulfan: Red Wings will reveal assistant coaches’ identities tomorrow

Updated 2x at 10:08 PM: Things you miss out on because you’re sitting in the stands: the Detroit News’s Ted Kulfan reports that the Red Wings have decided upon the assistant coaches who will flank Mike Babcock’s shoulders sometime on Friday:

The Red Wings will name coach Mike Babcock’s two assistants Friday. General manager Ken Holland said Babcock went through an extensive interview process with candidates from the junior to pro levels.

Paul MacLean and Brad McCrimmon were Babcock’s assistants in 2010-11. MacLean took the head coaching job with the Ottawa Senators and McCrimmon left to become a head coach in Russia.

“The guys we’ll announce will bring energy and some new ideas,” Holland said. “You want guys with communication skills, some ideas on specialty teams and some new ideas.”

Continued with some tidbits from the Wings’ summer development camp.

Update: The Detroit Free Press’s George Sipple confirms:

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said the team plans to announce Friday the hiring of two assistant coaches. Western Michigan coach Jeff Blashill is among those believed to be a finalist for the position.

Holland wouldn’t discuss any potential candidates but did say they were looking “some people with some different ideas. We’ll see.”

He said Wings coach Mike Babcock talked to many people in the industry, from college and junior coaches to assistant coaches to former NHL head coaches.

“We got down to a small, workable number the last few days,” Holland said Thursday. “Tomorrow we’ll announce our staff.”

Update #3: Per the Macomb Daily’s Chuck Pleiness:

Ken Holland told The Macomb Daily Wednesday that Friday was the day the two new assistants will be named. The Wings made that announcement official Thursday.

A source confirmed that Western Michigan University head coach Jeff Blashill is a finalist for one of the two assistant coach openings.

Holland would not confirm if Blashill is a finalist but did say, “We have had conversations with him.”

Blashill guided the Broncos to the NCAA Tournament this year for the first time in 15 seasons. He squad also made it to the CCHA tournament championship game.

Because of those accomplishments the school increased his base salary from $150,000 to $275,000. He also could earn $100,000 more in incentives.

Blashill has been an assistant coach at Ferris State and Miami University. In 2009, he was named head coach and general manager of the Indiana Ice, a Tier 1 junior hockey team in the United States Hockey League. In his only season there he guided the Ice to the championship.

read somewhere else, maybe on this site, that Connor will be given a chance to compete for a spot on the Wings. He’d have to clear waivers upon being sent to the Griffs, :/

Maybe we’re hiring Michel Therien as an asst too

I think I might have the inside track on this one.  The OFFENSIVE assistant will be Claude Lemiuxe and the DEFENSIVE assistance will be Darren McCarty.

From what I hear, the only player allowed to bust ass in the locker room is Holmstrom.
