As of Saturday lunch, the Carolina Hurricanes are in ninth place in the East, three points below the playoff cut. They’ve got one game in hand against seventh place Montréal and three games in hand against eighth place Atlanta, both of whom have 51 standings points compared to Carolina’s 48. The Hurricanes have played well over the last few weeks. They’re 6-1-2 in their last nine games and have made up a lot of ground to put themselves in the playoff conversation. The only problem is that only two of those nine games have been against teams currently above the playoff cut.
Starting tonight against the Lightning, the Hurricanes play five straight games against playoff teams, and they’re going to need to get at least six of those ten points to stay in the conversation. The Thrashers are in a free-fall, which may or may not continue, but the Hurricanes would rather take care of their own business.
Even though they’ve been winning, they’ve struggled with consistency and that’s another thing that’s going to have to change if they expect to even qualify for the playoffs. One thing that should change tonight is that they should be less timid offensively.
