USA’s new duds not as spiffy as Canada’s

On Monday, both Canada and the United States revealed their new hockey sweaters.  Canada’s had been leaked a few days prior, and I must admit that I love the way it looks.  Although the USA revealed their sweater today, there aren’t any “official” photos of it.  Not anywhere that I’ve found anyway.  However, I was able to find somebody’s online photo album with a bunch of pictures.

Nothing exciting.  The “road” blue sweater is a little darker than usual. “USA” is in white block letters in a very slight arch.  It’s a really goofy serif font, and I really find serifs to be intolerable.  Boxy neckline, stars on the shoulder and the player number on the very top of each sleeve.  Thick red stripe on the waist with a thin white stripe above that.  It’s very plain and looks very much like a collegiate sweater.  I won’t, without permission, use this person’s photos, but here’s a link to a picture of the “road” sweaters.  The others are a little better.

The “home” whites are only marginally less boring.  Crisp white.  “USA” in the same goofy serif font sprawled across the front in blue.  The shoulder yokes are blue, serving as a background for the white player numbers.  The star, which sort of serves as an alternate logo on the blue sweaters, is further down the sleeve on the white ones,  just above the elbow.  Below the star is are two thin horizontal stripes: red on top of blue.  The same thin horizontal stripes run along the waistline.  Here’s a link to a photo of those.

That’s not all, though.  Keeping with tradition, the USA will use 1960 replicas as their alternate home sweater.  “USA” going diagonally down from the viewer’s left to right.  Heavy red horizontal stripe sandwiched by two thick blue stripes at the waist and the same thing on the elbows.  They will probably be worn once.  Finally, here’s the link to that photo.

I was really hoping for something new and exciting.  I was hoping for something that would inspire anything other than yawns.  While this new design is hardly “exciting”, I must admit that it’s a huge improvement on the terrible pieces of crap we’ve been wearing for the last few Olympics.  I really hated the motif of the S in “USA” being represented by a waving flag.  While I appreciated the non-serif font, I hated the design.

I would expect sales of the team Canada sweaters and shirts to be brisk—even on this side of the border (I kinda want one!), I’m not sure that team USA’s merchandise will do very well.

When the “official” photos and information is released, we’ll get a better look at USA’s duds.  For now, I’m not impressed.
