Canes fall in Eastern race

On Tuesday, the Hurricanes retired the number 2 of defenseman Glen Wesley.  In the game that followed, things did not go well for the Canes.  In other games around the league, things went even worse.

After taking an early 1-0 lead, Carolina looked like they had taken all the momentum from Sunday’s win in Buffalo, but it didn’t last long.  The Bruins showed why they’re the best team in the Eastby absolutely controlling the rest of the game.  They ended up with a 5-1 win.  In other games, both Buffalo and Florida won, meaning that the Hurricanes dropped to five points out of the playoffs.

To add injury to insult, three Hurricanes rearguards were hurt in the game.  Nic Wallin had a cut on his face, requiring some stitches.  Later, Joe Corvo tweaked his knee a little.  Both players returned.  In the closing minutes, Joni Pitkänen left the game with an undisclosed injury and did not return.

The Canes just finished a tough three game stretch out of which I was hoping to get three points.  They got two.  Their next stretch of six games (@Islanders, vs Lightning, vs Avalanche, @ Ottawa, vs Buffalo, @ Atlanta) is one in which I’m hoping for ten points.

The only problem is that if things go the way they are going now and Carolina finds a way to get the eighth playoff spot, it’s going to be ugly in the first round.  The Bruins have absolutely owned the Canes in all four meetings this season.  On the other hand, looking at the standings as of this morning, teams five through eight are all tied with 66 points.  Anything could happen.
