Worst Power Play In Ages

The Florida Panthers have a 7.5% power play success rate through about a quarter of the season.  This is unsustainably bad.  Last season, the Toronto Maple Leafs had the worst power play in the league, with a 14.0% success rate.  Florida was second worst at 14.2%.

In fact, Florida has only scored five power play goals all season.  Two were scored by Dennis Wideman and one each by Bryan McCabe, Michael Frolik and Steve Reinprecht.  One two power play goals have been scored by Florida forwards.

Florida didn’t have many goal scorers on the power play last year.  Only three players had more than three power play goals on the Panthers last year.  One of them is Nathan Horton, who has been traded to Boston.  Stephen Weiss led the team last year with 12 power play goals.  He is yet to score any this year.  Likely he will pick up his game in the remainder of the season.  He scored 33 goals last year and has only five so far this year.  Michael Frolik, who had five power play goals last year has one this year and is scoring at roughly the same rate.

Florida doesn’t have much power play talent.  They don’t have much scoring at all.  Their majority of success comes from their ability to keep goals out and a large part of that credit goes to goaltender Tomas Vokoun.  Vokoun is one of the best goalies in the league and has been overlooked for a long time since he has played on weak teams in weak markets.  An argument can be made that he is the best goalie in the NHL.

Tomas Vokoun is an unrestricted free agent this summer.  What happens when he leaves Florida?  At this point, Florida could be in the race for worst team in the league.  Florida is a team that lacks any strong offensive players, who would then lack a star goaltender.  Things are not looking up in Florida.
