Penguins Reduce Training Camp Roster by 13 Players

I will be back shortly with some thoughts on the moves, but the team has shipped out 13 players to their Wilkes Barre-Scranton Affiliate and or their respective junior teams. Amongst the cuts is former first round pick Simon Despres, who hasn’t had an overly impressive training camp. The moves leave 42 players on the training camp roster.

PENGUINS REDUCE TRAINING CAMP ROSTER BY 13 PLAYERS

11 to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton; 2 to Juniors

The Pittsburgh Penguins reduced their training camp roster by 13, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.

Eleven players were assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Two were returned to their junior teams.

Joining Wilkes-Barre/Scranton are forwards Brandon DeFazio, Brian Gibbons, Ben Street, Paul Thompson and Geoff Walker; defensemen Simon Despres, Alex Grant, Joey Mormina, Philip Samuelsson and Carl Sneep; and goaltender Patrick Killeen.

Forwards Tom Kuhnhackl (Windsor, Ontario Hockey League) and Dominik Uher (Spokane, Western Hockey League) were returned to their respective junior teams.

The Penguins have 42 players remaining on their training camp roster (27 forwards; 13 defensemen; 4 goaltenders).

Surprising to see Despres getting sent down without even one pre-season game.

eh he has to get settled in WB anyways & wasn’t making the Pens with 7 D on 1 way contracts

I’m confused because AHL camp starts on Sunday and he obviously could get some valuable time with the big guys in the meantime.

Some reporter called in to the fan and insinuated Depres knew he was going down to the AHL before he got to camp, no matter what he did. Maybe Depres was dogging it.
