Happy Birthday, Logan Couture. He says that all he wants for his birthday is a win. That’s very mature of him, planning to give us a present on his birthday, or, at least, to go get his own.
So, the Sharks play in Anaheim tonight. What have we got?
We have stats to tell us what we know has already happened: Sharks lost 4 of 5 to the Ducks. We have dinosaurs. We have the Ducks who won’t lie down. Wait. I don’t think I have ever seen a duck lie down. How would a duck lie down? To lie down, I think you have to put your head on the ground, or a pillow, or… Wouldn’t a duck have to be dead to do that?
We have the Sharks on a three game winning streak. Right now, the Sharks are at the top of the division, the Ducks at the bottom. And yet…
According to the most recent Shark Byte, if you had told Joe Thornton at the beginning of this season that the Sharks would struggle to make the playoffs, he would have called you crazy. So, if someone had told him that a Ducks game would bring to mind Saint Crispin’s Day, would that make them more or less crazy?
Last time they met, the Ducks were not so far gone as they are now. Now they are in full-bore spoiler mode, they beat Detroit and the Blues recently. They lost their last game so they will probably feel a little extra like winning just to be jerks. Or, as Boudreau puts it, to be good sports:
Eric Stephens @icemancometh: “Not that Ducks have a bunch of young guys up but Boudreau said he feels obligation to other West contenders to put best lineup on the ice.”
Fine. They got their new coach, they had their twilight superhero, they had a scoring superstar and they still dropped the ball. I would not have any problem at all with them helping the Sharks out with a less than grand effort. The Sharks may have procrastinated but, unlike the Ducks, the Sharks can still catch up.
It doesn’t matter, it just doesn’t matter. The Sharks can’t care who they are playing, who’s in front of them, physically or statistically. “Run them all down” has to be the philosophy.
We have some lineup changes:
Kevin Kurz @KKurzCSN: “Galiardi in tonight with Moore and Mitchell. That would leave Handzus and the odd man out.”
Wait, Handzus missed practice yesterday too. Argh, writhe, grumble. I see injured people. Everywhere, all the time. Also interesting about Galiardi playing (aside from that link) is that he is so excited about it, he forgot to check with his coach to see if it was okay to announce it:
Mark Emmons @markedwinemmons: “TJ Galiardi said he will be on a line with Mitchell and Moore tonight. For the record, Todd McLellan was still being coy about changes.”
Whoops. He can be forgiven for over-sharing. It isn’t like he was whining out of turn. It seems that enthusiasm is what everyone expects from Galiardi anyway:
..numerous Sharks players and the coach have referred to Galiardi as having a “rat” factor to his game – as in, he has the ability to get under the opposition’s skin. In fact, Joe Thornton recalled that the Sharks “pretty much wanted to kill him” during the playoff series between San Jose and Colorado in 2010. -Sharks Talk
Meanwhile, Brent Burns has spent some time on an extensive study of desperation:
Brent Burns @Burnzie88: “Just crushed hunger games books 1/2 and the movie.Crazy story,@ryaneclowe29 wants me 2 read it to him #nopicturesinit”
Good, good. I mean, hey! Focus, boys, focus!
And we have the gnome:
hooch21 @hooch21: “@terriwpg yes the gnome is making his reappearance. We just want to see 4 in a row! plus see them play like they have for last 3 games!”
Praise be, Seewin is in the house! At least he will be. I don’t know what Seewin’s record this season is. But look at him, how could he hurt?
We’ll see Niemi start again. No surprise there. We will also see Hiller, though he won’t be starting all the remaining games for the Ducks. This is just a special treat for us. Thanks, BB.
Actually, there is no need to make things worse by throwing a backup goalie at the Sharks. Gets them all flustered. At least it did that to the pre-Hunger Games Sharks anyway. No thank you.
Quick summary of available resources: Labrador with a teal collar, dinosaurs, Seewin the gnome, some hungry Sharks, stats that say the Sharks should not have lost four games to this opponent, a bunch of selfish Ducks who must by now be light-headed from never lying down, some crazy fans and a birthday boy on a mission. We also have sunshine after days of gloomy rain. No month of May yet but sunshine we have.

About Petshark: Talking Stick
Native of Northern California. Hockey fan since 1998... sort of... there's a hiatus in there that I still can't explain.
I want to know about anything and everything related to the sport and the spectacle. I watch, I react, I write it down.
My interest in the Sharks was initially a matter of geographic convenience and regional loyalty because that seemed to be how it worked. I had no prior interest (at all-- AT ALL) in professional sports of any kind. When I met hockey, it might have set off a chain reaction of general sports fandom. It hasn't, I don't think it will. At all.
Since then, that interest developed into full blown (mostly sort of usually almost completely) exclusive loyalty to the Sharks.
I started blogging a couple years ago on wordpress. I still occasionally put things there that I don't think fit here because they are not about the Sharks. Wherever my words wander, here on Kuklas Korner, they will (usually) hang on to a teal thread.
