Oil Patch

Oilers at the Mid-season Mark

The Edmonton Oilers have finished last for the last two seasons and now with injuries mounting, the team has been in a bit of slide. Some are already expecting a third 30th place finish. It’s not as though the team has not been in games through their most recent roadtrip, but a loss by one goal is still a loss.

Just for fun, this is a comparison of the first half of this season for this year compared with the last two seasons.

The most obvious difference between this year and the two previous is goals against, but with the Oilers’ defence suffering setback after setback goals against have been mounting. Secondly would have to be the decrease in close games. Previously, the Oilers went to shootouts or overtime 8 times in 2009-10 and 10 in 2010-11. This year, that total is 3 in 2011-12.

There are still 41 games to go, but the Oilers are without Ryan Nugent-Hopkins for a month due to a shoulder injury, Jordan Eberle and Tom Gilbert will be missing a number of games due to knee injuries, Alex Plante is out with a concussion and Cam Barker (2months) and Ryan Whitney are out with ankle injuries. Eberle’s injury occurred Saturday and the Oilers have yet to make any announcement as to the severity of the injury or how long he is expected to miss, so there is a chance that Eberle may in fact be alright. I don’t think that anyone is counting on that.

The most alarming thing has to be the number of injuries sustained by Oilers players. With the top players out due to shoulder and ankle injuries, winning games becomes that much more difficult and it is up to the rest of the team to pull together as best they can.

About Oil Patch

Lisa McRitchie is a fairly new writer, online at least, but makes up for inexperience with passion for the game of hockey and memories of Mrs. Leskiw’s English AP class; who knew they would pay off one day.

Oil Patch focuses on the Edmonton Oilers, the Edmonton Oil Kings, The Oklahoma City Barons and Team Canada Hockey with game coverage, news updates, speculation and interviews.

Although the Oilers have had a difficult past decade… or three, here at Oil Patch, the future looks bright.
