Orange & Black Breakdown

Top 3 1st Round Flyers series

The Flyers have the luxury of spending the next few days watching (scouting) their next possible opponents battle it out.  Call it torturous all you want to not have a set opponent, but this is way better than preparing for a Game 7 tonight in Pittsburgh.  Looking back on the series, this series is easily in my ‘Top 3’ for 1st round series as far as entertainment/joy is concerned (and it didn’t even go 7 games).  After the jump, it is chocked full of goodies as I round out my top 3 favorites as well as give you a breakdown of the 2nd round possible match-ups:

Next 1st round series that comes to mind is the 2008 Capitals series where we went on to win a double overtime game in Game 4 and won the series in overtime in game 7:
Warning: Hockey loses a bit of its sexiness without HD

Who would thunk it: “Off the great feed by Jeff Carter”

Pizza deliveries only take 40 seconds in Washington

And to round out my top 3, the series with the Leafs in 2003 was truly a gauntlet because the winner of this battle would be left in pieces for the next opponent to clean up as this series saw 3 lenghty OT sessions.  2 of them ending in double overtime losses, but none sweeter than Mark Recchi’s triple overtime magic:

Dorny: “And on the 75th shot, Mark Recchi wins it…OHHH BABYY”

It’s always great to reminisce.  Strange thing about this year is that even though this series ended in 6 games, the Flyers found (earned) themselves a week off.  For me, the Flyers are lucky they didn’t sweep the Penguins, but I know others would debate otherwise.  We could be talking about a week and a half of no hockey.  Rust for the players, boredom for the fans.  Without further ado, let’s get into the possible scenarios for the Flyers for the 2nd round:

Flyers cheat sheets of who they’ll be playing

For those who are gamblers at heart (like myself), here are the chances for each team:

25% - Panthers

25% - Devils

12.5% - Rangers

12.5% - Bruins

12.5% - Capitals

12.5% - Devils

Over-analyze this all you want, we won’t know our opponent until Thursday.

Lastly, to round out today, here are 2 of my favorite videos that I have recently watched.  First is Giroux having a little fun with some fans before Game 5 in Pittsburgh.  The second is a video by Hartnell for the NHLPA, which in my opinion has been a great success because you get an inside scoop of the players’ personalities (check out NHLPA’s YouTube page for more videos of the Flyers from the season)

Enjoy and Happy Playoff Season to you all

‘04 was amazing.  When the conference finals preview comes around, I’ll tell my story on it because that series, and that game in particular is the best day I’ve ever had as a Flyers fan

About Orange & Black Breakdown

The Orange & Black Breakdown looks to be the ultimate, around the clock source for news and information on the Philadelphia Flyers organization and it’s ever-present quest for the Stanley Cup. Focusing on what the team can do to achieve success is the ultimate goal.

The OBB is written and maintained by myself - Marc Siciliano. I’m a college graduate and media production professional in the sports industry with credits on projects like Hard Knocks: Bengals and 24/7 Penguins vs. Capitals: Road to the Winter Classic. A man of many hobbies, I always seem to find a way to spend a disproportionate amount of my daily routine with two things: Flyers hockey and social media (much to the dismay of my hockey impartial friends on twitter).

So what does this mean for you? The plan is to combine these time-wasting habits passions with my love for writing to provide you with complete coverage of the Flyers from both my head and around the web, 24/7.

This is my second writing stint focusing on the Flyers, but for a much larger audience - so do be gentle. Different perspectives and opinions on the organization are welcome and encouraged. Just because I see it one way doesn’t mean I’m beyond seeing it your way as well, so speak up!

I’m always interested in interacting with readers, so find me on twitter (@marcs797) or email me (theobbreakdown@gmail.com) and let’s talk hockey.
