Orange & Black Breakdown

Game 29: PHI @ WSH

Little late on the write up today.  I’m a little off because I’m working out of Nashville this week.  The one hour difference is messing with me.  Regardless, Flyers face off against the Capitals who have yet to get it going since firing Boudreau.  After the jump, we get into the details…

Washington Capitals (15-12-1 | 31 pts) vs Philadelphia Flyers (18-7-3 | 39 pts)

The Flyers just suffered the greatest loss amidst their 5 game winning streak.  Giroux is out with a concussion.  I’m devastated and afraid of what the long-term ramifications are for this injury.  He has quickly raced by Richards and Gagne as my all-time favorite Flyers because of the pure creativity and tenacity that he garners night in and night out.  Now, all that remains is a question mark and an ache in my heart hoping that this all will turn out okay.

Now onto the hated Capitals.  What’s up new Atlantic conference foes).  Distaste is building for them, especially because of certain beat writers.  I will never let go of the last time we played in the playoffs against each other, and someone chose to attack our in-game hype-up videos because they were too violent.  Take off the skirt.  This isn’t the National Crosby League…where diving and whining is expected.  No, it’s the National Hockey League…where physicality and speed is craved by rabid fans.

Ovi is pickin’ up the pace as of late

What to expect from the Capitals:

Great 8: Where art thou?  I’m not going to beat to death the stats behind your decline.  Instead I will say that you used to be one of my favorite players to watch.  Not only are the wow goals long gone, but goals in general are few and far between.  You have allowed attention-seeking writers to make ridiculous claims that you take steroids.  Please stop thinking and carrying the pressures of being Captain (looking at you Richards) and just play.  Just make sure you wait until after this game to do so.

Nicklas Backstrom: Hands down their most dangerous player right now.  He is lethal with the puck on his stick.  31 points in 28 games (15 of which are of power play variety) are what immediately jump out at you.  Don’t take silly penalties against this team because he will be the one that seals your fate.  He is even tougher in the confines of his own home with 18 points, so he will be the one to watch tonight.

Jason Chimera: I could have talked about Semin’s downward spiral, but instead looked to the leading goal scorer on the team.  He has 11 goals this season and no power play points.  Something doesn’t add up.  Is he really a junker or are they misusing him.  One thing you will want to take note is whether his ugly grill will blind the Flyers throughout the game.

Hideous creature alert

Keys for the FLYERS tonight:

Welcome party for Jagr: How long until the booing starts up in Washington?  He did not bring much to the table while he was there.  He was looked as a waste.  Well sad to say for Caps fans, he is still a beast.  Look for him to be the guy that paces the Flyers while Giroux is out.  He may miss his favorite buddy on the team, but we it now falls on his shoulders to replace his production.

Voracek:  Is he mimicking his game after Jagr? When he wants to play, he looks unstoppable with the puck on his stick.  No one can push him off it.  He needs to now look to score.  His passing game is top notch, but he needs to be more selfish.  Look for him to do so now that their glue guy (Giroux) is out of the lineup.

Cooter: Will he start producing now that he’s off a line with 2 offensively-challenged linemates?  His development will fun to watch.  He has a chance to put up some serious points now.  You know he’s itching to score points after putting up points at every level throughout his life.  He has a better shooting percentage (11.4%) than Simmonds, JvR, and Voracek.  Now it’s time to start putting proof in the numbers in his first game as the number one center for the Flyers.

I’m blaming his struggles as a Capital on those awful looking jerseys

My BOLD predictions for tonight:

4-2 Flyers
-Cooter struggles to find the chemistry with Hartnell and Jagr
-Read pots a laser
-Hartnell keeps his goal-scoring streak going

About Orange & Black Breakdown

The Orange & Black Breakdown looks to be the ultimate, around the clock source for news and information on the Philadelphia Flyers organization and it’s ever-present quest for the Stanley Cup. Focusing on what the team can do to achieve success is the ultimate goal.

The OBB is written and maintained by myself - Marc Siciliano. I’m a college graduate and media production professional in the sports industry with credits on projects like Hard Knocks: Bengals and 24/7 Penguins vs. Capitals: Road to the Winter Classic. A man of many hobbies, I always seem to find a way to spend a disproportionate amount of my daily routine with two things: Flyers hockey and social media (much to the dismay of my hockey impartial friends on twitter).

So what does this mean for you? The plan is to combine these time-wasting habits passions with my love for writing to provide you with complete coverage of the Flyers from both my head and around the web, 24/7.

This is my second writing stint focusing on the Flyers, but for a much larger audience - so do be gentle. Different perspectives and opinions on the organization are welcome and encouraged. Just because I see it one way doesn’t mean I’m beyond seeing it your way as well, so speak up!

I’m always interested in interacting with readers, so find me on twitter (@marcs797) or email me (theobbreakdown@gmail.com) and let’s talk hockey.

Thanks for reading; Lets go Flyers!
