Anders Lee, a sophomore at Notre Dame and a 6th round draft pick of the Islanders in the 2009 NHL Draft, continued his great play this season over the weekend against Bowling Green. Lee leads the nation in goals with 10 and is fourth in points with 13. Lee has to be regarded as an early leader in the Hobey Baker race and could prove to be a 6th round steal for the Islanders. Lee is physically ready to play in the NHL and, when he does turn pro, I don’t anticipate him being in the minors for long.
Anders Lee-Notre Dame-Lee continued his hot start to the season by leading the Irish to a weekend sweep of Bowling Green. On Friday night, Lee scored his 9th goal of the season-a power play goal at 13:45 of the first period to give the Irish a 1-0 lead. Lee tied Saturday’s game at 2-2 in the third period with another power play goal that gave him 10 goals on the young season. Lee also registered five shots on goal in Saturday night’s game. The 5th ranked Irish travel to Marquette, Michigan next weekend for a weekend tilt with Northern Michigan.
Brock Nelson-University of North Dakota-The Fighting Sioux earned their first WCHA win of the season on Saturday night against St. Cloud State. In Friday night’s 3-0 loss, Nelson recorded five shots on goal. Nelson scored one goal in Saturday night’s 3-1 win over the Huskies and recorded two shots on goal. Eight games into the season, Nelson is tied for the team lead in goals with four and is third in points with eight. The 12th ranked Fighting Sioux travel to Minneapolis next weekend for two tough road games against the 8th ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers.
Corey Trivino-Boston University-Trivino was held scoreless in a 2-2 tie on Friday night against UMass, but came back with a strong game on Saturday night. On Saturday, Trivino scored one goal, added an assist, and registered four shots on goal in a 5-4 OT win against UMass. The 13th ranked Terriers only have one game next weekend as they travel to Lowell, Massachusetts for a game against UMass-Lowell on Saturday night.
Jason Clark-University of Wisconsin-Clark played his first two games of the season this weekend and registered one shot on goal and two PIM on Saturday night in a 6-3 Badgers win against Nebraska-Omaha. The Badgers are on the road next weekend as they travel to St. Cloud, Minnesota for two games against St. Cloud State.
Scott Mayfield-University of Denver-It was a tough weekend for the 2nd ranked Pioneers as they were upset 7-2 on Friday night by Michigan Tech and had to settle for a 2-2 tie on Saturday night. Mayfield registered one shot on goal in Friday night’s game. DU hosts defending national champion and 15th ranked Minnesota-Duluth next weekend for a two game series.
