Islanders Sign Jay Pandolfo, Ryan Strome

Earlier today, veteran forward Jay Pandolfo agreed to a one-year deal with the New York Islanders.  Pandolfo will provide a veteran presence for a group of young, talented Islanders forwards. The Islanders also inked Ryan Strome to an entry-level contract just before the 5 PM deadline.  Strome was the 5th overall pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

Both of these signings were anything but a surprise, but it is good to finally see them both get done.  At this point in his career, Pandolfo isn’t going to amaze anybody, but he will provide a good veteran presence on the ice.  Pandolfo won two Stanley Cups during a 14-year career with the New Jersey Devils and certainly knows what it takes to get through an 82 game season and the playoffs.  This is a pretty low risk signing for the Islanders, but I don’t see Pandolfo providing much more than some leadership for this team.  Pandolfo is coming off of a shoulder injury and spent only part of last season with Springfield of the AHL.  While Pandolfo was a stalwart on successful Devils teams of the past, he is at the end of his career and didn’t play in the NHL last year.  This is a good depth signing for the Islanders and, at a minimum, will provide veteran leadership for a young team.  Read the press release announcing the Pandolfo signing here.

Strome inked a three-year entry level contract.  The Islanders organization and fans have very high expectations for Strome.  He will carry with him the expectations that come with being the 5th overall pick.  Strome will most likely be one of the final cuts before the opening night rosters are due.  Strome is coming off of a great season in the OHL for Niagara.  Last season, Strome finished third in the OHL scoring race with 106 points.  “The Islanders are a team that is on the rise and I’m thrilled to have the chance to be a part of this young group of players committed to seeing this historic organization succeed,” Strome said. “I couldn’t be happier to begin my career on Long Island.”  Read the press release announcing the Strome signing here.

I like this signing because of the injuries to Rakhshani, Niederreiter, and Colliton to start the season.  Pandolfo is probably better than Frischmon and Ullstrom.  No reason to give 15 minutes a game to AHL players if you don’t have to, even if it is only until Nino comes back.  Rakhshani is probably a little bit better than Pandolfo at this point too but he’ll be out a while from what I hear.

I agree.  I think that JP is definitely better than Frishmon and Ullstrom and can provide a nice veteran presence that those two cannot.  Nino is day-to-day at this point, so hopefully he will be back soon, but you never know with those groin injuries.
