There were no big surprises when the New York Islanders announced their 23-man roster earlier today. Nino Niederreiter being on injured reserve with a groin injury certainly made the decisions a little bit easier. The Isles will start the season with 13 forwards, 7 defensemen, and 3 goalies.
Forwards (13): Josh Bailey, Blake Comeau, Michael Grabner, Matt Martin, Matt Moulson, Frans Nielsen, Kyle Okposo, Jay Pandolfo, PA Parenteau, Marty Reasoner, Brian Rolston, Ryan Strome, John Tavares
Defensemen (7): Mark Eaton, Travis Hamonic, Milan Jurcina, Andrew MacDonald, Mike Mottau, Steve Staios, Mark Streit
Goalies (3): Rick DiPietro, Al Montoya, Evgeni Nabokov
Players currently on injured reserve: Rhett Rakhshani, Nino Niederreiter, Mark Katic, Trevor Gillies, Jeremy Colliton
Forward Trevor Frischmon and defenseman Dylan Reese were assigned to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the AHL. Kirill Kabanov was returned to the QMJHL.
After signing a three-year entry-level contract yesterday, Strome makes the team for now. Strome will probably only be with the Islanders for nine games just like Nino Niederreiter was last season. Nino is day-to-day at this point and is trying to recover from his groin injury. Milan Jurcina is nursing an injury as well and it is not yet known whether he will be ready for opening night.
Arthur Staple of Newsday believes that Dipietro will make the start in goal on Saturday night against Florida with Nabokov backing him up.
